From personal trauma to global movements: how individual healing is reshaping communities
Panel explores the ripple effect of wellness journeys at El Salvador symposium
In the lush setting of El Salvador, against a backdrop of mountains and coastal views, five changemakers gathered to share how personal crises transformed not only their lives but sparked movements with global reach. The session, "Awakening Collective Consciousness: From Individual Healing to Global Movements," formed a cornerstone of the three-day Reclaiming Health & Longevity Symposium held this November.
"Sometimes you're called to step up, to process within and do it beyond yourself—for your family, for your community—and through that, you create a blessing and a light for others," said Majd Faiz, who shared his journey from leaving "Communist Canada" during the pandemic to building community in El Salvador.
The alchemy of personal crisis
Eddie Mentore, a second-generation Salvadorian entrepreneur, opened the panel by sharing how concurrent personal tragedies catalyzed his wellness journey.
"In 2016, I had been in the wellness space for about ten years. I thought I was pretty healthy until one moment hit me hard," Mentore told the audience. "I lost my father, lost two major companies, and my son was born—all within five months."
This convergence of events led to health issues that conventional medicine couldn't resolve. A six-day water fast became his turning point, leading him to develop cleansing protocols that eventually helped thousands. Mentore has since channeled this healing experience into building wellness resorts and communities throughout El Salvador.
El Salvador: a nexus for transformation
A recurring theme throughout the panel was El Salvador's unique position as a haven for innovation and healing. Ryan Matta, documentary filmmaker focusing on child trafficking, noted: "I've been to 20 countries this year, and there's no place like El Salvador. It's magical."
Matta highlighted the country's remarkable safety transformation, citing over 1,050 days without a homicide in certain areas—a stark contrast to its former reputation. His work connecting anti-trafficking initiatives with local community resources showcased how individual advocacy can create protective environments for society's most vulnerable.
Education reimagined: cultivating sovereignty
Shannon Falkenstein shared how personal setbacks led her to question traditional education and eventually establish Acton Academy in El Salvador, an alternative school model emphasizing entrepreneurship and personal responsibility.
"Every child deserves to find a calling to change the world in a profound way—each a sovereign being on their hero's journey—and radical personal responsibility is what gives you the utmost freedom," Falkenstein explained.
The school, now serving 70 students, incorporates practical business experience and has partnered with My First Bitcoin to teach financial literacy—demonstrating how educational innovation can address systemic gaps in preparing children for an uncertain future.
Technology as liberation tool
The intersection of healing movements with technology emerged as another significant thread. Multiple panelists credited Bitcoin with enabling their work despite institutional resistance.
"If it wasn't for Bitcoin, I wouldn't be able to do this work," said Matta, who described being deplatformed from nearly every social media outlet while investigating child trafficking. "Bitcoin gives us financial sovereignty when spreading awareness about topics 'they' don't want out."
This technological sovereignty extends beyond finance into what panelists described as "guerrilla journalism"—using mobile phones and decentralized platforms to document realities that mainstream channels might suppress.
The collaborative ethos
Perhaps most striking was the emphasis on collaboration over competition. The panel itself exemplified this approach, with spontaneous connections forming between Falkenstein's school and Matta's anti-trafficking work.
"The true battle today is for you, your soul," noted Faiz. "We don't need to battle; by collaborating and co-creating, we become unstoppable, indestructible, building a future with abundance for all."
As the symposium continued through its final day on Wednesday, this spirit of collaborative healing appeared to resonate beyond the formal sessions, with attendees forming connections and planning initiatives that transcended national boundaries.
In closing the session, moderator Christopher emphasized how community resilience emerges from authentic exchange: "Tyranny starts with self-censorship and loss of free speech. We must liberate ourselves to discuss difficult topics—wellness, Bitcoin, and entrepreneurship—openly."
The Reclaiming Health & Longevity Symposium concluded on November 12th, leaving participants with frameworks for transforming personal healing journeys into movements with lasting global impact.
