At Biohacker Summit X London, Teemu Arina Asked A Harder Question Than How To Live Longer
The biohacking movement has long sold a familiar promise: better sleep, cleaner blood sugar curves, sharper focus, longer life. In conference halls and wellness clinics, resilience is often framed as something to be engineered with protocols, devices and discipline. But in London on 1 September 2023, at Biohacker Summit X London, Teemu Arina complicated that story.
Arina, founder of Biohacker Center and co-author of *Biohacker’s Handbook*, delivered a presentation titled *Next-Level Biohacks for Psychological & Physiological Resilience* that moved restlessly between cellular biology, evolutionary theory, thermal stress, trauma psychology and the uneasy emotional architecture beneath self-optimization. His argument was both seductively practical and disarmingly existential. Human resilience, he suggested, does not begin with gadgets or grit. It begins with balance, exposure, and a willingness to confront the parts of ourselves that optimization culture often tries to hide.
The Human Body As A Superorganism
Arina’s opening premise was expansive. Humans, he said, are not solitary biological units but holobionts, superorganisms composed in concert with ancient bacteria, fungi, viruses and microbiomes that inhabit the gut, skin and cells themselves. Even mitochondria, the engines of cellular energy, are the descendants of ancient bacteria folded into us through evolution.
This was more than an elegant metaphor. It was the biological foundation for his view of health. Resilience, in this telling, was not a matter of domination over the body but of ecological stewardship within it. Diversity and equilibrium in the microbiome support immune strength in much the same way biodiversity protects a forest or reef from collapse.
“Health is to be in balance, and imbalance leads to disease,” Arina said. “Biohacking is about restoring homeostasis in your gut, your circadian rhythms, and the way you are in tune with the external world.”
The point landed because it quietly overturned the macho strain of biohacking. The goal was not merely to become harder, faster, more efficient. It was to become more whole.
Why Stress, In The Right Dose, Keeps Us Alive
Much of Arina’s physiological case for resilience turned on hormesis, the idea that controlled exposure to stress can strengthen the systems it briefly strains. Extreme cold, intense heat, fasting, hypoxia and exercise all place demands on the body that, in moderation, activate repair and renewal.
He described how heat and cold stimulate cellular defense pathways, including heat shock proteins, autophagy and FOXO3-related mechanisms linked to DNA repair and longevity. These are not cosmetic upgrades. They are ancient survival responses, built over millennia in environments far harsher than climate-controlled modern life.
“If you live only in a comfort zone and never expose yourself to stressors, you are not becoming more resilient,” Arina said. “Your body begins down-regulating the mechanisms that are actually beneficial for your survival.”
That line cut to the core of his thesis. Comfort, for all its seductions, can become biologically corrosive. A life without challenge may feel safe, but it can leave the body underprepared, inflamed and metabolically brittle.
Lessons From The Tardigrade And The Limits Of Human Comfort
To dramatise resilience, Arina invoked the tardigrade, the near-mythic water bear capable of surviving punishing temperatures, immense pressure, radiation and years without water. Humans, he made clear, are nowhere near so indestructible. A drop of just a few degrees in core temperature can trigger hypothermia. A rise beyond narrow thermal limits can become life-threatening.
And yet the very fragility of the human body is what makes adaptive stress so important. Sauna, cold immersion, fasting and breath-related stressors work not because we are invincible, but because we are not. The body answers these carefully measured threats by cleaning cellular debris, improving vascular function, sharpening metabolic flexibility and boosting immune readiness.
Arina pointed to evidence that Finnish sauna bathing two to three times a week can reduce the risk of seasonal flu by around 60%, while also lowering inflammation and improving endothelial function. Sauna, he noted, can even mimic aspects of moderate exercise.
His recommendations were practical, if not exactly gentle: a 16-hour fast, followed by 30 minutes of exercise, then repeated cycles of hot sauna and brief cold exposure to intensify autophagy and cellular renewal. But he also warned against the usual excesses. Large meals, alcohol and overexposure can turn a beneficial stress into a damaging one. In his framing, resilience required not just intensity but calibration.
The West’s Crisis Of Overfed, Underchallenged Bodies
Arina’s critique of modern life was unsparing. Chronic disease, he argued, is increasingly driven by the collision of abundance and passivity: too much food, too little movement, artificial light, broken circadian rhythms, chronic inflammation and stress without meaningful adaptation.
He noted the scale of the crisis. Large portions of the global population now live with multiple chronic conditions, especially later in life. Behind many of these illnesses lie the same recurring patterns: low-grade inflammation, oxidative stress and insulin resistance.
Modernity, in this view, had not simply made life easier. It had made the body forgetful. It had blunted the mechanisms that once helped humans withstand difficulty. Delivery apps, sedentary routines and hyperprocessed diets were not just conveniences. They were, collectively, a slow untraining of the species.
When Biohacking Becomes A Mask
But the most striking turn in Arina’s talk came when he shifted from mitochondria to motive. Why, he asked, do people want so desperately to optimize themselves in the first place? What if the drive to become a better version of oneself is not always healthy ambition, but sometimes a sophisticated coping mechanism?
This was where his keynote became less a wellness lecture than a critique of contemporary identity. Biohacking, he suggested, can become a neurotic strategy for controlling pain, insecurity or trauma. The body becomes a project not because one is free, but because one is frightened.
“Excellence is not an act but a habit,” he said. “To change your life, you must understand that your repeated behaviors are often rooted in deep psychology and the coping mechanisms you developed long ago.”
Arina drew on psychoanalytic ideas about childhood attachment, separation, control and compensatory behavior. Perfectionism, compulsive striving, aggressive self-discipline and anxious self-monitoring may all appear socially admirable while hiding profound insecurity. The high performer is often rewarded right up until the body revolts.
In that sense, the biohacker and the burnout victim may be closer kin than either wants to admit.
The Wounded Healer In Wellness Culture
Arina was especially perceptive on the figure who now dominates health culture: the healed sufferer turned guide. The influencer who once battled inflammation, obesity, brain fog or collapse and now markets the protocol that saved them. There is often truth in these stories, he acknowledged. But there is also risk.
One control strategy can simply be replaced by another. The person who once felt powerless may become obsessively regimented. The underlying wound remains, only dressed in the language of health, discipline and personal transformation.
His warning was not anti-healing. It was anti-performance. Too much of wellness culture, he implied, confuses symptom management with self-knowledge and public identity with inner resolution.
“Waking up to who you are requires letting go of who you imagine yourself to be,” Arina said. “Authenticity is the ability to show up as you truly are, without the need to hide behind a fabricated narrative or a superhuman avatar.”
The False Self, The Public Persona, And The Pressure To Perform Wellness
That idea found one of its sharpest expressions in his discussion of narrative identity. Modern people, especially visible ones, are constantly invited to package themselves. A CV, an Instagram feed, a speaker biography, a before-and-after transformation story: all are forms of curated selfhood.
Arina knew the machinery from the inside. As a prominent figure in the biohacking world, he described how public images and repeated media framing can produce a stylised version of the self, a kind of wearable-laden cyborg archetype that becomes difficult to escape. The danger lies in beginning to live for the reflection. The public persona hardens; the private self narrows.
This is where resilience ceased to mean endurance alone. It came to mean vulnerability. It meant tolerating the exposure of being ordinary, incomplete and unarmoured in a culture that rewards polished narratives and heroic self-invention.
True Responsibility As The Ability To Respond
If Arina’s diagnosis was severe, his prescription was not nihilistic. Psychological resilience, he argued, requires a movement away from compulsion and towards response. Not reaction, not defence, not performance, but response.
“True responsibility is your ability to respond,” he said. “It involves taking ownership of your reactions and choosing to respond with awareness, allowing you to find the insight necessary to move from a wounded state to one of resilience.”
There was something almost old-fashioned in that appeal. Beyond the molecular pathways and thermal protocols lay a moral discipline: to pause, to examine, to choose. It echoed Stoic practice, trauma theory and contemplative psychology all at once.
The task was not to become invulnerable. It was to become less governed by inherited fear.
Resilience As Homeostasis, Not Heroics
By the close of his presentation at Biohacker Summit X London, Arina had offered something rare in the world of performance health: a defense of balance over bravado. He did not reject biohacking. He enlarged it, and in doing so made it less marketable and more human.
The deeper challenge, he suggested, was not to become a superhuman avatar but to inhabit one’s actual organism wisely. To restore rhythm where there is dysregulation. To welcome stress where there is stagnation. To let go of identities built on compensation. To see that the body’s finest intelligence is not endless escalation, but homeostasis.
In an age intoxicated by upgrades, that may be the most radical biohack of all.
