In an age that liked to package health as a subscription, a supplement stack or a punishing workout, Tateki Matsuda offered something more elemental. Speaking at Biohacker Summit X London on Friday, 1 September 2023, the Japanese UFC fighter and trained movement scientist argued that the most effective form of biohacking was often the least glamorous: restoring the body’s basic capacity to move well.
Matsuda, who combined the authority of a professional MMA career with academic training in sports movement science and applied nutrition, did not pitch movement as spectacle. He presented it as infrastructure. Before strength, speed and skill, he insisted, came mobility and stability. Before athletic performance, there had to be sound mechanics. And before expensive treatment, there had to be prevention.
“I consider true biohacking to be what you can do for free,” he told the audience. “Fasting, good sleep, and simple, effective ways to take care of your body depending on your purpose.”
A Rebuke To The Culture Of Punishment
Much of the talk worked as a quiet rebuttal to the old exercise catechism of suffering. No pain, no gain, Matsuda suggested, had become one of the most misleading slogans in modern fitness. The body did not always need to be broken down in order to improve. Sometimes it needed to be educated, coaxed and rebalanced.
He described movement quality as the foundation on which all other performance rested. In practical terms, that meant a person who lacked the mobility to raise a shoulder properly, or the stability to control a trunk under load, had little business rushing into complex lifts or sport-specific drills. The issue was not ambition. It was sequencing.
That hierarchy mattered all the more in a culture defined by sitting, screens and repetition. The modern body, Matsuda argued, was shaped less by dramatic injuries than by low-level habits repeated thousands of times. A neck craned toward a smartphone. A chest collapsed over a laptop. A hip held in flexion for most of the day. The result was not simply tightness, but adaptation. The brain learned those positions as normal.
“Your movement patterns tell the story of your lifestyle,” he said. “Every movement sends a signal to your brain, making corrective exercise and self-quantification essential to finding your true center.”
The Rise Of The “Exercise Snack”
One of the sharpest ideas in Matsuda’s presentation was also one of the simplest: the “exercise snack”. Not a workout in the traditional sense, but a short corrective intervention scattered through the day. A neck release. A rotation drill. A quick hip activation. A movement performed not to chase exhaustion, but to interrupt it.
This approach carried a particular force because it acknowledged reality. Most people were not going to spend hours each day in ideal motion. They were going to work, commute, sit, scroll and repeat. The question was how to disrupt those patterns before they hardened into pain.
Matsuda demonstrated small, targeted drills for the neck and shoulders, aimed at countering the chronic forward pull of screens and sport postures alike. He spoke of re-educating the nervous system, not just stretching a muscle. A stiff body, in his account, was often a body that had learned the wrong message too well.
Biohacking movement, as he framed it, was therefore less about performance enhancement than about maintaining optionality. It was a way of keeping the body available to itself.
Breathing, Core Stability And The False Security Of External Support
If there was a central warning in the talk, it concerned compensation. The body, Matsuda made clear, was endlessly clever at finding ways around dysfunction. A person lacking thoracic mobility might arch the lower back to reach overhead. Someone with poor internal stability might brace against a belt rather than learning to coordinate breathing and posture. Performance could still happen, but at a cost.
“Your body should learn how to stabilize your core with proper breathing,” he said. “Instead of depending on a belt, teach your brain how to maintain correct posture and use your diaphragm to breathe deeply.”
This was not merely a technical point for athletes. It was a wider argument about physiology. Poor posture, he suggested, opened the ribcage, disrupted diaphragmatic breathing and nudged the body toward a permanently revved state. In that frame, movement quality was inseparable from nervous system regulation. A body that could not exhale well might also struggle to relax well.
The implication was striking. Corrective exercise was not a cosmetic add-on to real training. It was part of the architecture of recovery, respiration and resilience.
Middle Age, Metabolism And The Collapse Of A Familiar Excuse
Matsuda also touched on emerging research in ways that challenged another deeply embedded belief: that midlife decline was an unavoidable metabolic sentence. Referring to evidence that basal metabolic rate remained broadly stable until around the age of 60, he urged the audience to reconsider the reflexive line that aging alone explained declining health.
“Until the age of sixty, your metabolic rate doesn’t slow down,” he said. “If you take care of your body well and apply biohacking, you can stay healthy without using the excuse that you are simply getting old.”
There was, in this, a note of provocation but also of liberation. If the body was more durable than people imagined, then the causes of physical decline were often more modifiable too. Sedentary habits, poor recovery, chronic postural collapse and badly designed training could no longer hide behind the inevitability of age.
Matsuda paired this with discussion of research on very short, high-intensity bouts of activity. Four-second sprint efforts, performed periodically, had been linked to improved fat oxidation and lower triglyceride levels. The broader point was not that everyone should start sprinting every twelve minutes, but that the minimum effective dose of movement might be smaller, and more practical, than fitness culture often admitted.
A More Honest View Of Women’s Physiology
One of the most notable sections of the session came when Matsuda turned to biological difference, especially the neglect of female physiology in mainstream exercise science. Too much of the evidence base, he said, had been built around male subjects, then casually universalised.
His corrective was straightforward: women’s training, fasting and recovery protocols should be adjusted across the menstrual cycle rather than treated as fixed. The follicular phase, he suggested, better suited higher intensity and harder training. The luteal phase called for greater care, more recovery and more respect for changing hormonal demands.
In a wellness culture often eager to flatten difference into slogans, this was a reminder that optimisation without context could quickly become negligence. Biohacking, in Matsuda’s telling, was only useful if it remained accountable to biology.
The Workstation As A Health Device
Not all of the talk dealt in grand concepts. Some of its most useful observations concerned the ordinary environment where many bodies quietly unraveled: the desk.
Matsuda described ergonomic adjustments as the low-hanging fruit of self-care. Screen height, elbow angle, sitting variety, brief walking breaks, supportive surfaces for the feet and other micro-movements all mattered. Static sitting was a problem. So, he noted, was static standing. The body thrived on variation rather than virtue.
That insight echoed one of the broader themes of the day. Human beings were not built for singular postures maintained for hours. They were built for continual low-level adjustments. The healthiest movement culture, then, might look less like a heroic class and more like a series of interruptions.
Prevention As A Moral And Practical Imperative
Again and again, Matsuda returned to prevention. In doing so, he shifted the mood of the room from aspiration to accountability. Biohacking was not, in his view, a means of transcending the body. It was a way of listening to it earlier.
“Biohacking movement is all about prevention,” he said. “While treatment is expensive, we invest early to prevent our health from declining. It is a tool to analyze yourself and prioritize your recovery.”
That line landed because it cut through the market noise around wellness. What Matsuda proposed was not anti-technology, and he acknowledged the usefulness of wearables and self-tracking. But he placed them in their proper order. Data was only useful if it led to better choices. Metrics could tell a person about sleep variability or heart-rate recovery. They could not, on their own, undo eight hours of collapse at a desk.
Move Well, Then Move Often
By the close of the presentation at Biohacker Summit X London, Matsuda had assembled a coherent philosophy from what might otherwise have seemed like scattered advice. Sleep mattered. Nutrition mattered. Workstation design mattered. Cycle-aware training mattered. But movement sat at the centre because it was both mirror and mechanism. It reflected the life a person lived, and it shaped the body that life would be lived in tomorrow.
His final message was admirably unadorned. The goal was not maximal punishment, maximal complexity or maximal output. It was quality, consistency and efficiency. One well-used hour, he suggested, should improve the other twenty-three.
In a culture still tempted by extremes, that idea felt almost radical in its restraint. The body did not need to be conquered. It needed to be understood.
Move well. Move often. In the end, Matsuda made it sound less like a slogan than a survival strategy.
