Dr. Olli Sovijärvi is one of the pioneers of holistic medicine in Finland. In 2006 he graduated from the University of Helsinki with a Licentiate degree in Medicine. In 2010–2011 Dr. Sovijärvi completed an integral theory degree at John F. Kennedy University, focusing on psychology and philosophy. For the first five years of his career as a physician, Dr. Sovijärvi was employed by Finland’s first medical recruitment agency. He has worked at nearly 50 different clinics and ERs around Finland. Jaakko Halmetoja is a nutrition & wellness expert, author, entrepreneur and public speaker with a pace of around 100 lectures per year. On 1 November 2019, at Biohacker Summit 2019 Helsinki in Finland, the speakers behind Biohacker’s Handbook offered more than a parade of wellness tricks. In a brisk, idea-dense presentation titled *Biohacking Protocols for Optimizing Your Day*, Teemu Arina and Dr. Olli Sovijärvi, with references to their collaborator Jaakko Halmetoja, laid out a worldview in which health, focus, resilience and recovery were not separate pursuits, but parts of a single ecological relationship between the body and its surroundings.

That line served as the presentation’s governing principle. Arina described how environment often overruled willpower. Rather than relying on heroic self-control, he argued for shaping the physical world so that desirable behaviour became easier and distraction became harder. In his own case, writing demanded a separate computer with no internet connection, no social media and no digital clutter. Deep work, he suggested, required a dedicated context.
That logic extended to habit-building. “To change behavior, it is actually easier to inject something new into an existing sequence of rituals or routines than to create completely new ones,” he said.
It was a practical insight, almost modest in tone, but it cut through the self-improvement industry’s appetite for total reinvention. The speakers urged the audience to fold new actions into existing patterns: a wall sit while coffee brewed, kettlebell swings during a phone call, a few push-ups scattered through the day. The point was not spectacle. It was repetition.
Routine, in this framework, became destiny in miniature. A day was not an incidental unit of time. It was the place where biology learned what to expect.
Performance As A Stack, Not A Single Intervention
From there, the talk moved into what biohackers like to call “stacking” protocols, combining several stimuli at once to produce a stronger effect than any one of them might alone.
Sovijärvi described an “optimal businessman’s workout” designed for efficiency rather than duration. Whole-body vibration, infrared or red light exposure and variable resistance training were presented as a compact system for producing a potent physiological response in minimal time. Rather than spending long hours exercising to exhaustion, he argued for creating a more concentrated stimulus.
The presentation’s one-liner captured the idea neatly: optimizing daily performance required the strategic alignment of biological systems with external environmental conditions.
There was, to be sure, something unmistakably contemporary in the image they conjured: the human body as both organism and platform, open to calibration through light, temperature, resistance and data. Yet the underlying concern was old-fashioned enough. How could people become stronger and more capable without wasting themselves in the process?
Why The Brain Needed The Body
One of the session’s most forceful arguments concerned the bond between physical movement and cognition. In a culture of screens, seated work and endless information flow, Arina made the case that exercise was not ancillary to thinking but essential to it.
“The more we work with computers and information, the more we should work out,” he said. “When you are exercising your body, you are also exercising your brain.”
The remark carried both urgency and rebuke. Sedentary work had become normal; the neurological cost of it, he implied, had not been reckoned with. Large muscle movement, the speakers argued, supported neural growth, cognitive flexibility and activation of the prefrontal cortex. Micro-workouts across the day, even brief ones, were framed as a way to sharpen reasoning, improve problem-solving and interrupt the slow metabolic and mental drift of static work.
It was one of the strongest moments of the presentation because it reframed exercise from a matter of aesthetics or discipline into a condition of mental competence.
Recovery As A Serious Practice
If performance occupied one side of the equation, recovery occupied the other. And here the Biohacker’s Handbook team was particularly insistent: restoration should not be left to chance.
Their mental recovery protocol was almost ceremonial in its layering. Neurosonic vibration, photobiomodulation, spike mats, essential oils, binaural beats and box breathing were combined into a 20-minute intervention intended to coax the nervous system out of vigilance and into repair. Sovijärvi also described a personal evening practice that paired sauna with inversions in a yoga swing, using heat and altered blood flow to decompress the spine and settle the body before sleep.
The larger claim was that recovery could be engineered with the same seriousness people typically reserved for productivity. Deep sleep, nervous system downregulation and neural regeneration were not luxuries after the real work was done. They were part of the work.
In this sense, the talk resisted one of the more destructive myths of modern professional life: that a person could continue borrowing from tomorrow’s reserves indefinitely.
Immunity, Balance And The Limits Of More
On immunity, the speakers were careful not to fall into the crude language of endless boosting. Medicinal mushrooms such as Chaga and Reishi, vitamin D, niacin, sauna, infrared heat and cold plunges all appeared in their discussion, but so did a note of caution.
“What is most important is balance,” Arina said. “Finding the right balance between things that are stimulating and things that are weakening is key.”
That was a necessary corrective. In an age that often treats health as escalation, more supplements, more cold, more stimulation, more data, the presentation briefly paused to recognise that the immune system could also be pushed out of equilibrium. The goal was not maximal activation. It was resilience.

Arina described spending time in an off-grid coastal cabin, working amid sea air, natural light, cold water and the absence of digital interruption. In that environment, he said, his baseline stress levels dropped sharply, despite continuing to work. The observation stood in quiet contrast to the gadget-heavy protocols elsewhere in the talk. Sometimes, he suggested, the most sophisticated intervention was to leave the city.
The speakers repeatedly returned to the restorative force of forests, parks, sunlight, fresh air, grounding and cold water. After stimulation, whether from public speaking, meetings or social intensity, cold immersion was recommended as a direct way to reset physiology. Nature, in their telling, was not wellness theatre. It was regulation.
“We often try to solve a problem just by thinking about it,” Arina said. “But if you change your physiological state, you can hit the problem with very different eyes.”
That sentence may have been the presentation’s deepest insight. It suggested that many modern difficulties, overwhelm, indecision, agitation, fatigue, had been misclassified as purely mental when they were also bodily states. Change the body, and the mind might no longer experience the same world in the same way.
The Quantified Nervous System
No contemporary biohacking presentation would be complete without data, and Biohacker Summit 2019 Helsinki was no exception. Heart rate variability, resting heart rate, sleep architecture and recovery curves were presented as tools for seeing what subjective feeling often obscured.
The appeal of wearables, in this account, was not novelty but honesty. Tracking stress and recovery made it harder to romanticise overwork or mistake depletion for productivity. Arina described comparing high-pressure conference days and finding that a tiny intervention, one mindful breath with eyes closed before a meeting, materially changed his stress profile across the day.
This was striking not because it required expensive hardware, but because it suggested that the nervous system responded to small moments of intention. A person did not need to disappear into a mountain retreat to alter their physiological trajectory. Sometimes they needed a pause, repeated often enough to matter.
A Movement Between Science, Ritual And Desire
The biohacking movement has often invited skepticism, and not without reason. It can drift into consumer fetish, abstraction or the illusion that every human problem is a variable awaiting optimisation. Yet in Helsinki that November, the Biohacker’s Handbook presentation was at its most convincing when it escaped that trap.
