Dr. med Egorov is working in the field of holistic medicine for about 30 years. In 2007 he came into contact with hypoxia for the first time. On a cold November day in Helsinki, amid the polished optimism and restless experimentation of Biohacker Summit 2019 Helsinki, Dr. Egor Egorov stepped forward with a proposition that sounded, at first hearing, almost reckless. What if less oxygen, administered carefully and briefly, could help the body heal, adapt and perform better?
His presentation, *Cellgym – Interval Hypoxia for Mitochondrial Rejuvenation & Improved Performance*, did not frame hypoxia as a medical emergency or a biological failure. Instead, it cast low oxygen as a precisely dosed stressor, a calculated challenge capable of coaxing the body into resilience. In Egorov’s telling, the same force that could harm in excess might, in measured intervals, restore.
That paradox sat at the heart of his talk.
A Biohack Rooted In Stress, Not Comfort
Dr. Egorov, a physician who had worked in holistic medicine for roughly three decades and had focused intensely on hypoxia since 2007, argued that controlled oxygen deprivation belonged to a family of interventions that improved the body by challenging it. He also situated his work in a longer eastern European research tradition, noting that the investigation of intermittent hypoxia for beneficial effects stretched back more than 70 years through work in the former Soviet Union, Russia and Ukraine. That framing mattered. In the wellness and biohacking worlds, claims often arrive before evidence. Egorov’s approach was to insist that this was not mere futurist theatre. It was physiology.
