Loseva pointed to research published in *The Lancet* showing that 11 million people die each year because of poor diet. At the centre of Loseva’s thesis was a deceptively simple fact: human beings are not nutritionally identical.
“We geneticists know exactly what makes every human so special,” she told the audience. “It is about five million tiny changes in your DNA that define not only your eye color or earlobe type, but also your unique metabolic features.”
Those variations, she argued, were the reason universal dietary recommendations so often fell short. The popular notion that one ideal diet could serve everyone ignored the mechanics of biology. A food hailed as wholesome in public health campaigns might be beneficial for one person, inefficient for another and actively problematic for someone with a specific predisposition.
Broccoli, in this telling, was no longer a moral instruction. It was a question.
The New Frontier Of Prevention
If nutrition advice had long been built around averages, Loseva wanted to relocate it to the level of the individual. This was where nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics entered the picture: fields that explored how genes influence nutritional needs, and how food, in turn, affects gene expression and disease risk.
“Genetics gives us insights into our predisposition to common illnesses,” she said. “When you know your risk, you can focus on prevention and use nutrigenomics to learn how your food influences your genes to prevent different diseases.”
Her examples were practical rather than abstract. Someone with a stronger inherited risk of cardiovascular disease might choose a Mediterranean-style diet and reduce salt intake. Someone else, facing different vulnerabilities, might require a very different strategy. What mattered was not dietary ideology, but fit.
In Loseva’s framing, genes did not deliver a sentence. They offered a warning, and with it, a chance to act before illness took hold.
Everyone Has Their Own Superfood
Perhaps the most memorable phrase in the talk was also its most marketable. “Everyone has their own superfood,” Loseva said.
The point was not that wellness culture had been right all along, but that it had been too vague to be meaningful. Superfoods, as commonly sold, were broad fantasies of nutritional virtue. Loseva’s version was narrower and more exacting. A superfood was not a universally celebrated ingredient. It was the food that best matched the needs of your own metabolism.
“Because our DNA contains a lot of information about the way your metabolism works, you can understand the best food and nutrients that your body needs,” she said.
That proposition rested on differences in nutrient absorption. Loseva used folic acid, or vitamin B9, to illustrate the point. If a roomful of people ate the same spinach salad, she said, some might absorb all the folic acid available, while others might absorb only 70% or even 60%. In her own case, she said, she belonged to the latter group. A seemingly healthy meal, then, did not guarantee equal nourishment.
The consequence of that disparity was not trivial. Over time, inadequate absorption could contribute to deficiency and, potentially, to serious disease. Nutrition, in this framework, was not just about what sat on the plate. It was about what the body could actually use.
The Immigration Paradox And The Limits Of Imported Diets
Loseva also reached for a broader social example, invoking what she called the “immigration paradox”. Japanese people who moved to the United States and adopted an American diet, she noted, began to show patterns of illness less common in Japan. For her, this was evidence that food culture and biology could collide in damaging ways when diet drifted far from what a population, or an individual, was best equipped to handle.
It was a provocative interpretation, and one that fit neatly into her larger point: food could not be separated from the body that consumed it. A diet successful in one setting might fail in another, not simply because of habit or environment, but because metabolism itself was not universal.
From Raw Genetic Data To Daily Meal Choices

She described a model in which people could use DNA data, including raw files from ancestry and consumer genetics services such as 23andMe, MyHeritage and Ancestry, to build personalised nutrition plans. Those plans would identify nutrient needs, flag deficiencies, highlight disease predispositions and even generate recipes based on an individual’s biological profile.
In a brief audience exchange after the talk, she was asked what such a service would actually tell a user. Could it decide whether pasta belonged in their life, or whether fat suited them better? Loseva’s answer was pragmatic. The system, she said, would show which nutrients a person needed more of, identify relevant genes and mutations, and translate that information into food choices and recipes that could shape everyday eating.
This, in the end, was her most persuasive move. She did not present genetics as a distant medical frontier. She presented it as a shopping list, a plate, a lunch decision made with more knowledge than guesswork.
A New Ethics Of Eating
There was something quietly radical in Loseva’s closing appeal. “Every day our choices should be different because of our different genetic risks,” she said. “Next time you eat, just think about what choices are the best fit for you and your unique body.”
The line distilled the moral shift her talk demanded. Nutrition, as she described it, was no longer about obedience to public commandments or aspiration toward dietary purity. It was about attention. To risk. To variation. To evidence. To the body as an individual system rather than a generic consumer of approved foods.
