At the HOLOLIFE Summit in Tallinn last Friday, Dr. Olli Sovijärvi presented compelling evidence for what he terms "The Holy Trinity of Recovery" – a sequential protocol combining hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), whole-body cryotherapy, and red light therapy. The Finnish physician, who has worked across nearly 50 clinics throughout his career, explained how these therapies create synergistic effects when used together rather than in isolation.
"The fundamental cause of all degenerative disease is a condition called hypoxia—oxygen deprivation at the cellular level," Sovijärvi told the audience gathered for the opening day of the three-day wellness summit. "If we are constantly hypoxic, our cells are not thriving and we are not functioning at our best."
The science of hyperbaric oxygen therapy
Sovijärvi explained that while HBOT has been used medically for decades, particularly for divers' decompression sickness, mild hyperbaric oxygen chambers have recently experienced explosive growth in the wellness sector.
"In Finland alone, we've seen a 10 to 15-fold increase in availability just over the past year," he noted.
These wellness-focused chambers operate at lower pressures (1.3-1.5 atmospheres) than medical-grade units but still deliver significant benefits, according to Sovijärvi. The therapy works by creating what he called a "hyperoxic-hypoxic paradox" that activates nearly 200 healing genes while increasing mitochondrial biogenesis.
Perhaps most intriguing were the references to studies showing increased stem cell production and telomere lengthening after multiple HBOT sessions. "One study found increased telomere length up to 20% overall and 37-38% in B cells, with reduction in senescent 'zombie' cells," Sovijärvi said. The second component of Sovijärvi's trinity involves brief exposure to extreme cold temperatures between -100°C and -160°C in specialized chambers. These sessions typically last just 2-4 minutes but produce remarkable effects, particularly when combined with other modalities.
"Especially when combined with HBOT, cognitive effects are impressive—better memory, attention, mood, sleep, and life quality," he explained, citing research showing cryotherapy's effectiveness for chronic pain conditions and muscle recovery after intense exercise.
Sovijärvi cautioned that timing matters. "Don't do cryotherapy immediately after heavy lifting if aiming for muscle gain; rather, wait 2-4 hours or the next day," he advised.
The cellular power of light
The third element, photobiomodulation – commonly known as red light therapy – uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to penetrate tissues at different depths.
"Red light activates cytochrome C oxidase in mitochondria, increases nitric oxide, and creates temporary oxidative stress followed by antioxidant response," Sovijärvi explained. "The main effect is increased ATP – cellular energy."
Beyond energy production, he described benefits ranging from improved collagen synthesis and hair growth to enhanced muscle recovery and gains. He specifically highlighted emerging research on gut health: "It balances gut microbiota, reduces inflammation, strengthens intestinal walls, and supports the gut-brain axis."
The power of combination
The true innovation in Sovijärvi's approach lies in the sequential application of all three therapies. His recommended protocol involves 90 minutes of HBOT, followed immediately by 2-3 minutes of cryotherapy, and concluding with 10-15 minutes of whole-body red light therapy.
"Combining these treatments is more beneficial than each alone," he said, describing a cascade of effects that unfold over 48 hours, including enhanced circulation, decreased inflammation, mitochondrial biogenesis, and hormonal regulation.
A clinical study combining these approaches showed significant reductions in cholesterol and inflammation markers, substantial fat mass loss, and improved heart rate variability over six months.
The future of integrated recovery
While these therapies remain relatively new in mainstream wellness, their growing popularity suggests a shifting landscape in how we approach recovery and preventative health.
"You are among the first to witness the possibilities of combining these three therapies," Sovijärvi told attendees, positioning the approach as part of an emerging frontier in health optimization.
The HOLOLIFE Summit continued through the weekend with presentations from other experts in preventative health, biohacking and longevity science.
