On Saturday, 15 October 2022, at **Biohacker Summit 2022 Amsterdam** in the Netherlands, psychologist and neuropsychology specialist **Inka Land** offered a bracingly hopeful argument about the human mind. The brain, she suggested, was not a fixed archive of traits handed down by genes and sealed by childhood. It was a dynamic organ of revision, constantly reshaped by habits, attention, nutrition, sleep, environment and the stories people told themselves about who they were.
Her presentation, **“The Neuropsychology of Mental & Personal Development,”** moved between molecular biology and daily life, from ancestral inheritance to coffee rituals, from the amygdala to self-talk. The central claim was as scientifically grounded as it was emotionally expansive: human beings are perpetually wiring and rewiring themselves.
“**Brain structure is similar between individuals, but our connections are unique,**” Land said. “**What you build in your brain throughout your life is shaped by your lifestyle, your environment, and your experiences.**”
A Hundred Billion Neurons, And No Two Inner Worlds The Same
Land began with the sheer scale of the organ under discussion. The human brain, she reminded the audience, contains around **100 billion neurons**, an astronomical number packed into a remarkably small space. Yet what mattered even more than the cells themselves were the connections between them, the pathways through which perception, thought, emotion and identity emerge.
That was where individuality lived.
Brains may share broadly similar anatomy, but a person’s neural architecture becomes distinct through repetition and experience. Over time, lifestyle choices, stress exposure, learning, relationships and environment create patterns that make one mind different from another. In Land’s account, uniqueness was not some mystical essence. It was built, reinforced and revised in circuitry.
Genes Open Possibilities. They Do Not Deliver A Sentence
Land traced personal development back before birth, into the ancestral chain of parents and grandparents. She cited estimates suggesting that more than **700 genes influence metacognitive traits** such as empathy, self-reflection and learning, while another **700 affect temperament**, including stress reactivity, impulsivity and sensory sensitivity.
But she was careful to resist reductionism. Genes, she argued, do not function as singular verdicts.
“**Not a single gene will define your destiny,**” she said. “**Our life experiences and environment install epigenetic marks that tell our genes when to activate, to what extent to activate, and whether to activate at all.**”
She used the well-known COMT example, often simplified into the contrast between a “warrior” and a “worrier,” to show how misleading genetic shorthand can be. A gene involved in breaking down dopamine and noradrenaline may influence tendencies, but it does not dictate a person’s future. Human outcomes arise from interaction, not destiny. Nature and environment remain in constant negotiation.
Childhood As The First Programming Window
Some of Land’s most striking reflections concerned the **first five years of life**, which she described as a period of extraordinary neural sensitivity. During this rapid phase of development, the caregiver acts, in effect, as an early programmer of the child’s nervous system, shaping stress response, attachment and emotional regulation through repeated acts of comfort or neglect.
Secure attachment, she explained, affects how stress-related pathways develop. A child consistently soothed in moments of distress may form a different neural foundation than one left uncomforted. The implications can echo into adulthood in the form of resilience, emotional reactivity and the intensity of fear responses.
Nutrition, too, was presented not as a side issue but as literal construction material. Land highlighted **omega-3 fatty acids, folate, iron and choline** as key nutrients in neurodevelopment, helping build the central nervous system’s pathways during a phase when the brain is growing at speed.
Habits Become Identity Before We Notice They Have
If early life set the initial conditions, adulthood, Land argued, remained full of plasticity. And nowhere was that more visible than in habit.
Her account of habit formation was elegantly simple. A new action begins under the supervision of the **prefrontal cortex**, the brain’s executive centre responsible for attention, decision-making and self-control. But with repetition, the behaviour migrates into more automatic, **limbic-driven patterns**, cued by context rather than conscious deliberation.
A person who starts drinking coffee must initially think through the action. Soon enough, waking up and seeing the coffee machine becomes sufficient to trigger the urge. The behaviour has moved closer to autopilot.
This mattered because repeated behaviour does not merely shape routine. It shapes identity.
Before someone begins a practice, Land suggested, they might say they are interested in it. Once repeated often enough, the language changes: *I am this kind of person.* A gym habit becomes “I am athletic.” A health practice becomes “I am a biohacker.” What people do repeatedly feeds the internal narrative of who they believe themselves to be.

In that formulation, self-talk was not motivational garnish. It was neural instruction.
The Prefrontal Cortex As The Seat Of Change
Much of Land’s practical framework focused on strengthening the **prefrontal cortex**, the region central to self-control and behavioural change. If habits become automatic, then change first requires awareness strong enough to interrupt that automaticity.
She pointed to **self-awareness training, introspection, tracking and measurement** as tools for identifying repetitive patterns and the cues that precede them. Once those patterns become visible, attention itself can be trained.
Focused attention meditation, especially breath-based practice, featured prominently in her recommendations. These methods, she argued, help reinforce prefrontal control, increasing the capacity to choose rather than simply react. Sleep, exercise and omega-3 intake also appeared in her list of supports for executive function, alongside more technical interventions such as neurofeedback and clinical brain stimulation.
The message was unmistakable: self-control is not just a moral aspiration. It is a trainable biological capacity.
Memory, Repetition And The Regenerating Hippocampus
If the prefrontal cortex initiates change, the **hippocampus** helps consolidate it. Land described this structure as critical to learning and memory, and she emphasised a finding that still carries a kind of wonder: even in adulthood, the hippocampus can continue generating **new functional brain cells**, particularly in the dentate gyrus.
That detail underpinned the broader optimism of the talk. Personality and behaviour can change because the adult brain remains alive to revision.
But Land did not romanticise transformation. Neural change, she stressed, depends on **repetition and time**. New habits generally require somewhere between **21 and 66 days**, sometimes more, to become established. Desired behaviours must be repeated; undesired ones must not be.
Sleep was treated as indispensable. The hippocampus remains highly active during sleeping hours, making rest essential for memory consolidation and learning. Land also cited **aerobic exercise, calorie restriction, antioxidants, melatonin, lion’s mane, fatty acids, sauna, psychedelics and photobiomodulation** as factors that may support hippocampal activity or neurogenesis.
Against The Tyranny Of Labels
Perhaps the most resonant section of the presentation came when Land turned from brain regions to the history of personality theory. Across generations, psychology has tried to classify people into durable categories: introvert or extrovert, neurotic or agreeable, driven by childhood conflict, social environment or self-actualising needs.
Land’s objection was not that these frameworks were entirely wrong. It was that none had managed to fully capture a person across the course of a life.
“**You have limitless potential when it comes to self-growth and self-development,**” she said. “**We keep changing, regenerating, and rewiring, which means our personalities continue to evolve throughout our lives.**”
She urged the audience to loosen their grip on rigid self-definitions. Instead of treating identity as a box, she suggested treating it as a sequence: a present self worthy of gratitude, and future selves still coming into being.
“**Instead of trying to label yourself, be grateful for the person you are right now and appreciative of all the future versions you are becoming,**” Land said. “**Allow yourself to grow rather than getting stuck in a definition of who you are.**”
It was a striking inversion of contemporary self-branding culture. In Land’s telling, growth required not tighter identity management, but more openness to revision.
Personal Development As An Ethical Inheritance
The talk ended by widening the frame once more. Personal development, Land argued, was not merely private optimisation. It had social and intergenerational consequences.
Through what she described as **neural coupling**, people affect those around them. Through **epigenetic marks**, they may also influence children and future generations. Habits, stress patterns, resilience and lifestyle choices do not stop at the boundaries of the individual.
“**Personal development does not only affect us; it affects the people around us and future generations through the epigenetic marks we install,**” she said. “**We are responsible for our growth, not just for ourselves, but for those who follow.**”
That closing note gave the presentation its moral force. Rewiring the brain, in Land’s account at **Biohacker Summit 2022 Amsterdam**, was not just a matter of productivity, longevity or self-improvement. It was a way of thinking about responsibility itself: to the body, to the mind, to the people nearby, and to those not yet born.
