In a conference culture crowded with miracle powders, longevity promises and expensive machines humming with futuristic certainty, Alex Tarnava arrived at **Biohacker Summit 2022 Amsterdam** with a message that was at once highly technical and deeply personal. A Health Collapse Became The Beginning Of The Story
Tarnava anchored the science in autobiography. He told the Amsterdam audience that his own path into biohacking began not with optimization, but with physical ruin. At what he described as the height of his fitness, while running a successful business and training for hours each day in martial arts and CrossFit, he was hit by a mysterious virus. The aftermath was devastating: extreme inflammation, crushing fatigue, sudden narcolepsy and severe joint damage.
Doctors placed him on high doses of anti-inflammatory medication and cortisone injections, but the treatment came with costs. Ulcers followed. When he stopped the drugs, he said, his joints rapidly stiffened again. That crisis pushed him into the scientific literature in search of something that could regulate inflammatory response without breaking the rest of the body in the process.
“Within ten days of getting decent levels of hydrogen, my joints unfroze,” Tarnava said. “That led me to invest all my money and time into developing technology that can truly help people.”
The line was both origin story and sales pitch, but it also revealed the emotional engine beneath the presentation. Tarnava was not speaking as a detached academic. He was speaking as an entrepreneur forged by pain, then remade by conviction.
What Hydrogen Water Actually Is
For all the grand claims that often gather around wellness products, the substance itself was described in notably plain terms. Hydrogen water, Tarnava explained, was simply water with dissolved H2 gas, much as sparkling water contains dissolved carbon dioxide. No altered water molecule, no mystical restructuring, no quasi-spiritual chemistry. Just hydrogen in solution.
From there, however, simplicity gave way to scale. Tarnava pointed to a research field that, in his telling, had expanded rapidly over the past 15 years: roughly 2,000 publications, about 140 clinical trials, and beneficial effects observed across 170 disease models.
That breadth matters because hydrogen, as he framed it, does not behave like a conventional drug aimed at one narrow target. Instead, it appears to influence regulatory systems, especially those tied to stress response, oxidative balance and inflammation.
“Hydrogen is an adaptive stressor that we have had since the very beginning of our evolution,” Tarnava said. “It stresses out your cells and mitochondria, which then get stronger and adapt.”
An Evolutionary Argument For A Modern Intervention
One of the more compelling aspects of Tarnava’s talk was the evolutionary frame he used to explain why hydrogen might matter at all. The human body, he argued, was not encountering some alien compound. It had always lived in relationship with hydrogen.
He described a biological history in which early life forms were linked to hydrogen metabolism, and a present-day physiology in which gut bacteria still either produce hydrogen through carbohydrate breakdown or consume it as fuel. He also argued that our ancestors would have experienced hydrogen intermittently through diet and environment, with natural peaks and valleys rather than today’s more monotonous patterns of intake.
That rhythm, he suggested, was critical. In the language of hormesis, adaptive systems become stronger when exposed to manageable doses of stress. Too little challenge, and there is no adaptation. Too much, and the system breaks. Hydrogen, in this account, acts less like a sedative blanket and more like a finely tuned nudge.
Homeostasis, Not Hype
Perhaps the most scientifically interesting claim Tarnava advanced was that hydrogen should not be understood simply as an antioxidant. In the wellness marketplace, antioxidants are often reduced to a cartoon logic: oxidation bad, antioxidants good. Tarnava pushed back on that simplicity.
“Hydrogen helps you regulate stress responses and leads to homeostatic inflammation,” he said. “It regulates our responses to numerous stressors to lead to homeostasis and harmony.”
In practical terms, his argument was that hydrogen does not merely suppress inflammation or oxidative stress across the board. Rather, it appears to help the body modulate them according to need. In some contexts, inflammation is destructive. In others, it is essential to immune defence and repair. The same may be true of oxidation and autophagy. Tarnava noted that hydrogen often stimulates autophagy, the cell’s clean-up system, but in certain acute crises it may inhibit it, suggesting a regulatory rather than blunt-force effect.
That distinction is important because it separates hydrogen from the language of cure-all and places it, at least rhetorically, in the realm of biological balance.
The Clinical Claims That Drew The Room In
If Tarnava’s evolutionary narrative gave hydrogen philosophical depth, the clinical data gave it urgency. He said his patented hydrogen tablet technology had been evaluated in **11 clinical trials**, with additional case studies and preclinical research already completed, and around 15 more clinical trials underway with public research teams.
He emphasised what he described as an open-science approach. The researchers, he said, were based at public universities, controlled trial design, and retained the right to publish whether results were positive or negative. In a field often criticised for selective data and proprietary opacity, that claim was meant to signal seriousness.
The headline findings he shared were striking. Tarnava said hydrogen tablet studies had shown strong effects on metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, both conditions central to modern chronic illness. In one six-month double-blind placebo-controlled trial, he said, the intervention was effective in 21 of 23 measured outcomes related to metabolic syndrome.
He also highlighted studies on sleep deprivation and brain metabolism, where hydrogen reportedly matched or exceeded caffeine in restoring brain metabolic function, while working by a wholly different mechanism.
“Hydrogen returns your brain function back to normal,” Tarnava said. “It is different than taking a stimulant because it is simply returning brain metabolism back to its homeostatic function.”
That was a carefully chosen distinction. In a performance culture built on stimulants, hydrogen was being offered as something subtler: not a whip for the nervous system, but a route back to baseline.
The Anti-Ageing Claims Were The Boldest Of All
Then came the territory where modern biohacking most eagerly converges: ageing.
Tarnava described a six-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in participants over 70 that, he said, found improvements in telomere length, DNA methylation, brain metabolism, oxidative stress, inflammation, pain and some aspects of sleep. He also pointed to increased Tet2, a protein associated with rejuvenation pathways and sometimes discussed in relation to so-called young blood research.
Most tangible, perhaps, was the claim that older adults in the hydrogen group improved on functional fitness tests, including repeated sitting and standing. In a field often obsessed with biomarkers while neglecting the lived body, that detail landed with unusual force. To move better, in old age, is not an abstraction.
And yet these findings, however intriguing, sit in a space that demands caution as well as enthusiasm. In the language of conference presentation, they sounded near-revolutionary. In the language of science, they remain the beginning of a larger argument.
A Rebuke To The Supplement Industry
The second half of Tarnava’s talk widened from hydrogen to ethics. He spoke not only as an inventor and speaker, but as a critic of the commercial ecosystem around him. Much of the supplements business, he argued, was built on “microdosing” ingredients in amounts too small to matter, then dressing those products in the vocabulary of high performance and longevity.
“We are on a mission to lead by example in truth and honest marketing, moving away from just sprinkling microdoses of fairy dust into products to ensure they actually work,” he said.
That line drew on one of the oldest tensions in health consumerism: the divide between formulation and promotion. Tarnava’s warning was straightforward. A high price, a glossy package or a futuristic device meant little if the active compound never reached therapeutic levels. He recalled having tested an expensive hydrogen machine he once trusted, only to find it produced negligible amounts of H2.
The lesson, implicit and sharp, was that biohacking’s most vulnerable point may not be lack of innovation, but abundance of theatre.
The Larger Appeal Was For Scientific Literacy

It was about a recurring dilemma in modern health culture: how to distinguish a genuine therapeutic frontier from an industry that has learned to mimic the appearance of science. His answer was neither blind scepticism nor blind belief, but concentration, dosage, transparency and evidence.
For a molecule invisible to the eye, hydrogen occupied an outsized space in Amsterdam that day. Whether it ultimately transforms medicine, supplements or performance science remains to be seen. But Tarnava made one thing unmistakably clear: in a market flooded with promises, the future may belong not to the loudest claim, but to the one that can be measured.
