At Biohacker Summit 2022 Amsterdam, Shawn Wells Argued That The Future Of Mental Health May Lie Beyond Conventional Antidepressants
In Amsterdam, a city long associated with altered states and permissive thinking, Shawn Wells took the stage at Biohacker Summit 2022 Amsterdam with a subject that has moved from the cultural fringe to the scientific forefront: psychedelics as tools for brain repair, emotional recovery and cognitive renewal.
Wells, the nutritional biochemistry expert and celebrated supplement formulator, framed his presentation, *Brain Optimization with Psychedelics*, not as provocation for its own sake but as a response to a deepening mental health emergency. Speaking on Saturday, 15 October 2022, he wove personal testimony, emerging clinical evidence and biohacking protocol into an argument that was at once intensely personal and unapologetically ambitious.
For Wells, this was not an abstract scientific curiosity. He told the audience that psychedelics had transformed his own life after periods in which he had stood, as he put it, on the edge of suicide. That disclosure gave the talk its gravity. The claims that followed were sweeping, but they were also rooted in a conviction forged by experience.
A Mental Health Crisis Too Vast To Ignore
Wells began with scale. Rates of depression, PTSD and suicidal ideation, he said, had reached levels too large to dismiss as isolated suffering. He pointed to a world in which antidepressant use had risen sharply and where hundreds of millions were living with trauma.
“This is the pandemic,” he said, referring not to viral disease but to mental ill health.
His central contention was that the public conversation had lagged behind the evidence. While mainstream medicine had spent decades leaning on SSRIs and the serotonin hypothesis of depression, research into psilocybin, MDMA and ketamine had begun to tell a different story, one in which relief could arrive faster, deeper and, in some cases, with longer-lasting effects.
The Case Against A Narrow Serotonin Story
One of the most striking elements of the talk was Wells’s challenge to the orthodox narrative that depression is primarily a problem of serotonin deficiency. He did not dismiss serotonin altogether. Rather, he argued that the theory had become reductive, flattening the complexity of the brain into a single chemical story.
Depression, in his telling, was not merely a shortage of one neurotransmitter but a broader collapse in resilience, flexibility and neural vitality. Dopamine, glutamate, GABA, norepinephrine, acetylcholine and other signalling systems all mattered. So did neuroinflammation. So did immune function. So did the brain’s capacity to adapt.
Psychedelics, Wells argued, seemed promising precisely because they did not act on one pathway alone. Their effect was broader, more systemic, more capable of interrupting entrenched patterns.
“When your brain is depressed, it is not resilient and you stay in loops,” he said. “Psychedelics provide a global impact on the brain, allowing you to reframe in a neuroplastic way so your neurons can unwire and rewire.”
Psilocybin And The Idea Of Bringing The Brain Back Online
The language Wells used around psilocybin was vivid and at times almost evangelical, but he anchored it in data from major research institutions including Yale, Johns Hopkins and Northwestern.
He described findings suggesting that psilocybin could promote neuronal growth and help restore function in a brain diminished by depression. “Psilocybin brings the brain back online,” he said. “In clinical studies, seventy-one percent of people had a significant reduction in depression symptoms in just four weeks. These are cures and solutions that need to be shared.”
That line captured the moral core of the talk. For Wells, the scandal was not simply that psychedelics remained controversial. It was that people in profound pain might be denied access to potentially life-changing care because of stigma, law or cultural inertia.
He was careful, however, to stress that the results emerging from trials were not the product of casual use. They came from tightly guided settings, structured sessions and sustained follow-up.
MDMA, PTSD And The Possibility Of Relief
If psilocybin represented one frontier, MDMA represented another. Wells cited studies in which people with PTSD underwent preparatory sessions, carefully supervised dosing experiences and subsequent integration work. The outcomes, he argued, were extraordinary, with many participants no longer meeting the diagnostic criteria for PTSD after treatment.
That point mattered. Wells was not selling intoxication as medicine. He was describing a therapeutic process in which compounds functioned as catalysts rather than miracles on their own.
The distinction ran throughout the presentation. Psychedelics, he suggested, can open the door. They do not walk a person through life afterward.
Ketamine And The Weight Of Trauma
Of all the compounds discussed, ketamine drew perhaps the most emotionally resonant description. Wells characterised it as a fast-acting antidepressant with a dissociative quality especially relevant to trauma treatment.
“Ketamine can dissociate you from trauma,” he said. “It is like putting down a heavy backpack, looking at it, and saying, I do not need to wear that anymore. I can see what life feels like now without it, and I feel good.”
It was an image that landed because it translated neuropharmacology into lived experience. Trauma, in this account, becomes fused with identity. Ketamine, at least temporarily, loosens that bond. It offers not amnesia but perspective. For some patients, Wells implied, that may be the beginning of recovery.
Integration As The Difference Between Insight And Change
If there was one message Wells returned to with insistence, it was that the psychedelic experience itself is not enough. Revelation without reconstruction can leave a person stranded.
“There is nothing worse than coming out of a psychedelic experience, seeing your truth, and then going back to your regular life and doing nothing about it,” he said. “Integration work is essential to help you navigate those spaces.”
This was perhaps the talk’s most grounded and important note. In an era where psychedelics are often marketed through the language of transcendence, Wells brought the audience back to process, support and aftermath. Set and setting mattered. Professional facilitation mattered. The days and weeks after mattered.
In this framework, the medicine was not only in the molecule but in the container around it.
Neuroplasticity, The Default Mode Network And The Hope Of Rewiring
Wells’s larger thesis rested on neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to change its own structure and patterns. Depression, he said, traps people in repetitive loops, hard-packed cognitive trails that become ever easier to follow. Psychedelics, by elevating factors associated with neural growth and flexibility, may help lay down fresh snow across those tracks.
He spoke too about modulation of the default mode network, the system often associated with self-referential thinking and rigid patterns of identity. In his view, one of psychedelics’ great therapeutic possibilities lies in softening that network’s grip, allowing patients to step outside habitual narratives long enough to imagine another way of being.
It was a scientific explanation delivered in language accessible enough for a broad audience, but it carried philosophical consequences. If suffering is partly maintained by repetition, then healing may require not just emotional insight but literal biological openness to change.
The Biohacker’s Turn: Stacks, Recovery And Brain Support
Where Wells departed from many clinicians was in his fascination with “stacks” and adjunctive protocols. Drawing on his background in nutritional biochemistry and product formulation, he outlined a series of compounds he believed could support psychedelic experiences before, during and after use.
Among them were mitochondrial antioxidants such as L-ergothioneine, neuroplasticity enhancers such as 7,8-dihydroxyflavone, and recovery-focused compounds including dihydromyricetin, paraxanthine and acetylcholine precursors. He also referenced hydration, electrolytes, magnesium, adaptogens, cannabinoids and agents aimed at restoring serotonin or supporting cognitive energy after intense sessions.
This was not presented as a rigid formula. Wells repeatedly suggested experimentation, tailoring and caution. Still, the vision was unmistakable: psychedelic therapy as part of a wider architecture of brain optimisation, one that blends psychiatry, nutrition, supplementation and systems biology.
For sceptics, this may have felt like a leap beyond the available evidence. For enthusiasts in the room, it was likely the part that most clearly connected psychedelic medicine to the broader biohacking ethos of precision enhancement.
A Plea Against Stigma
Wells’s most forceful moral argument came when he turned from data to access.
“Psychedelics may not be your thing,” he said, “but let’s not make them no one’s thing when they could be clear solutions for people struggling with depression and PTSD who are not getting the help they need.”
It was the line that best captured the mood of the presentation. Not triumphalism. Not hedonism. Something more urgent. A demand that society distinguish between fear of a class of substances and the suffering of people for whom existing treatments have failed.
