Nordic Fintech Summit marks a decade of innovation amid AI transformation
Industry veterans reflect on evolution and future disruption at milestone event
As the Nordic Fintech Summit prepares to celebrate its tenth anniversary next year, industry leaders Ola Sundell and Janne Salminen set the tone for the milestone gathering with a thoughtful reflection on the sector's evolution and the transformative impact of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.
Speaking at the opening of the Nordic Fintech Summit scheduled for May 2025, the duo charted fintech's development through distinct phases while pointing toward a future where technological disruption is likely to accelerate dramatically.
From infrastructure to AI: tracing fintech's evolutionary path
"Ten years gives a bit of perspective on fintech — from the infrastructure era to the innovation hype period and now to new game changers like AI," Sundell observed, dividing the industry's growth into recognisable chapters that have shaped the Nordic region's reputation as a fintech powerhouse.
Salminen added perspective on how the sector has both fulfilled and defied earlier predictions: "If we think back ten years ago, what were the predictions? I think there's tons of same things that are slowly evolving, but then we also see a lot of new disruptive factors that are kind of emerging and possibly kind of game changers even in a short period of time. Like AI."
Acceleration of innovation in the AI era
Both speakers emphasised that artificial intelligence represents a pivotal moment for the industry. "There are moments in time when the future actually catches up with us, and AI is one of those disruptive technologies reshaping everything," Sundell said.
When asked about expectations for the coming decade, Salminen was unequivocal about the pace of change: "It's possible or even highly likely that things and the pace of how things are changing will just speed up dramatically." He added the obligatory industry joke that "next year blockchain will really come and change everything" – a nod to the perennial predictions around distributed ledger technology.
Building a premier forum for Nordic fintech
Looking ahead, the summit organisers articulated a vision of the event evolving into an even more significant industry gathering. "What I look forward to in the coming decade is definitely turning this event into the summit of high-level talks among top industry experts and specialists," Sundell explained.
The opening remarks underscored the importance of strategic thinking as a foundational approach to navigating fintech's rapidly changing landscape. This theme of strategy amid disruption seems particularly relevant as the Nordic fintech community balances decades of evolutionary progress with revolutionary technological shifts.
To symbolise the spirit of regional collaboration that has defined the past decade, the opening remarks concluded with a special invitation to Stockholm Fintech's Lewe Dager to join the celebration – highlighting the cross-border partnerships that have helped establish the Nordics as a global fintech hub.
