A Provocation From The Chair
At Biohacker Summit 2018 Tallinn, held on 15 September 2018 in Tallinn, Estonia, Veli-Jussi Jalkanen delivered a talk that set its sights on one of modern life’s most ordinary habits and cast it as a public health crisis hiding in plain sight. His presentation, *The Unknown Huge Impact of Sitting Health*, argued that the body’s slow unraveling often began not in catastrophe but in routine: at the office desk, in the car seat, in the conference room, in the hours spent folded into a posture the human frame was never designed to endure.
Jalkanen, a Finnish health innovator, entrepreneur and ergonomics specialist known for his work on sitting physiology and anatomy, spoke with the zeal of a man who had made himself his own experiment. His case was simple, if radical in implication. Sitting was not merely a neutral condition between movement and rest. The Geometry Of Human Comfort
Jalkanen began with an image of the body in water, relaxed and suspended. There, he said, the truth of posture revealed itself. In that floating state, the thigh-to-knee angle settled naturally at roughly 135 degrees, a position he described as the body’s neutral joint angle. Against that biological ease, he placed the dominant architecture of modern sitting: the rigid 90-degree chair.
His contention was that conventional seated posture forced the hips and knees into mechanically hostile positions, generating stress that accumulated across years. The cost, he warned, was not abstract. It was written in cartilage wear, hip degeneration and chronic pain.
“Human life is miserable if our joints are degenerated or in pain,” he said. “We must take good care of our cartilage through exercise and nutrition while keeping them away from bad conditions and unnecessary stress.”
In Jalkanen’s telling, the chair was not just furniture. It was an instrument that could either preserve the body’s alignment or quietly deform it.
Circulation As The Hidden Measure Of Health
If posture was the visible problem, circulation was the invisible one. Again and again, Jalkanen returned to a single idea: that sitting health was, at its core, about flow. Blood flow. Lymphatic flow. The microcirculation of tissues. The metabolic exchange that kept muscles, discs, nerves and organs alive.
He described the body as a vast landscape of pathways, from the major vessels to what he framed as hundreds of thousands of kilometres of microcirculatory networks. In that system, immobility was not passive. It was obstructive. Pressure from furniture, tight muscles, collapsed posture and restrictive clothing all conspired, he argued, to slow or block the movement on which tissue health depended.
The lymphatic system occupied a particularly important place in his framework. Jalkanen portrayed lymph nodes as outposts of waste removal and immune defence, gathering metabolic debris and confronting pathogens. Poor sitting, he suggested, did more than create discomfort. It impaired the body’s housekeeping and dulled its resistance.
This was ergonomics not as convenience, but as physiology.
The Vulnerable Spine
The lower back formed the emotional centre of the talk. Jalkanen gave special attention to the L4-L5 region, the site, he said, of most lower back trouble. His explanation hinged on motion. Spinal discs, unlike more richly supplied tissues, depended on movement-driven diffusion for nourishment. Without enough muscular activity and pelvic motion, they were poorly fed.
Slouching, in his account, did double damage. It reduced muscular engagement and increased mechanical load on the discs. By contrast, subtle pelvic movement, even the smallest oscillation, helped maintain muscle activity and supported the transport of oxygen and nutrients.
“When you have good posture and even the smallest movement in the pelvic area, your muscles stay active and strong,” Jalkanen said. “This activity is exactly what the human body needs to keep your systems functioning properly.”
He urged the audience into a brief experiment, asking them to feel the difference in their lower back muscles between a collapsed seated posture and an upright one with the legs opened and pelvis free to move. The point was tactile and immediate: posture changed whether the body became dormant or alive.
“The discs in our spine can renew themselves if we stay active,” he said. “We need furniture that encourages our muscles to work and pump blood automatically, bringing the oxygen and nutrients our bodies require to stay healthy.”
The Neck, The Brain And The Cost Of Slouching
The upper body, too, was caught in this chain of consequence. Jalkanen turned to the neck and the sternocleidomastoid muscle, arguing that even a slight forward tilt of the head created muscular tension that could compromise the vessels serving the brain and eyes. The office headache, the fatigue behind the eyes, the mental fog of long seated work, he suggested, might begin with posture long before they were blamed on overwork or screens.
“Good posture with relaxed neck muscles is crucially important,” he said. “It ensures your brain and eyes get enough oxygen and glucose to function at their peak throughout the entire day.”
It was a striking inversion of familiar workplace logic. Productivity was not simply a matter of focus or discipline, but of whether the body’s architecture allowed the brain to be supplied properly at all.
Clothing, Compression And Everyday Design Failures
Jalkanen’s critique reached beyond chairs to clothing, especially garments that compressed the thighs, chest and pelvis. Tight trousers, he argued, placed pressure on major vessels in the thigh and compounded the circulatory harms of sitting. Bras, in his view, could also interfere with circulation around the chest, shoulders and underarms.
The wider point was that much of what passed for normal design had been built for standing appearance, not seated health. Trousers might fit elegantly while upright, yet become constricting once the body folded into a chair. What the fashion and furniture industries treated as separate matters, he treated as one continuous ergonomic environment.
His language was sometimes provocative, even deliberately so, but the underlying complaint was clear: daily life had been engineered with too little regard for what happened inside the body once people sat down.
Reproductive Health And The Split-Seat Idea
Among the most unusual and memorable sections of the presentation was Jalkanen’s discussion of genital health. He argued that standard padded seats and tight clothing generated pressure and heat in ways that were harmful to both circulation and reproductive function. For men, he said, this was especially significant because sperm production depended on cooler temperatures than the body’s core. For women, he emphasised the need for ventilation and reduced pressure.
His proposed answer was the divided saddle chair, a split-seat design intended to create a central gap, reduce compression and encourage a healthier pelvic position. Such seating, he argued, supported not only posture and spinal motion but also genital circulation and temperature regulation.
The claim was characteristically expansive. In Jalkanen’s model, the ideal chair was not merely a support for the back. It was a device for preserving joint neutrality, activating muscles, protecting discs, freeing vessels, ventilating tissues and restoring the body’s capacity for movement even while seated.
A Future Beyond The Office Chair
Jalkanen ended with a vision that was part ergonomic forecast, part biohacker fantasy. He described future workstations in warm water, with the buoyancy of immersion reducing bodily load and the turbulence of water supporting lymphatic flow. In this imagined office, the body would be suspended, circulation enhanced, pressure relieved.
It was a vision easy to dismiss as eccentric. Yet beneath it lay a serious criticism of the present. The modern workstation, as he saw it, remained founded on stasis, constriction and a misunderstanding of what the body needed in order to thrive.
Even his dismissal of treadmill desks followed this logic. Walking while typing, he suggested in the question-and-answer session, introduced too much instability for effective computer work. The answer was not simply more movement, but the right kind of movement: subtle, constant, integrated into posture itself.
The Body As Workplace
There was something unmistakably old-fashioned in Jalkanen’s insistence that health began with mechanical realities. Angles mattered. Pressure mattered. Blood flow mattered. So did the shape of a seat, the cut of a trouser leg, the position of a monitor, the tilt of a pelvis. He spoke as though the body were not infinitely adaptable, but vulnerable, and as though comfort had too often been confused with support.
He also embodied, at least rhetorically, the lifestyle he advocated. Asked how he maintained his vitality at 67, he cited exercise, swimming, tennis, volleyball, sauna, sleep optimisation, supplements and good food. The answer was less secret than discipline. His argument about sitting was ultimately part of a larger preventive health philosophy: that decline was not always inevitable, and that design, habit and environment could either accelerate it or resist it.
