The grand crises of modern health are usually described in their final, devastating form: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, metabolic collapse. We speak of heart attacks, failing organs and spiralling public costs. But at Biohacker Summit 2018 Tallinn, held in Tallinn, Estonia on 15 September 2018, the entrepreneur and health technology advocate Nils Kämpe asked his audience to look elsewhere, to the near invisible terrain where, he said, many of these catastrophes first took shape.
“The big fires of chronic disease start as small fires in our microcirculation, and we need to address those small fires before they explode,” Kämpe told the room.
It was a characteristically biohacker proposition, marrying systems thinking with a belief in intervention before illness became obvious. Yet beneath the rhetoric was a sober point: much of human health depended on a vascular network too small to see, too quiet to feel, and too easily neglected until damage had already accumulated.
