In a room primed for human optimisation, Dr. Julia Shaw offered something more unsettling than a shortcut, a supplement or a cognitive upgrade. Instead, Shaw described memory as a vulnerable, malleable neural network, one that changed every time it was revisited. The implications were not merely academic. If autobiographical memory formed the backbone of identity, then distortion was not a side effect. It was part of being human.
“When you lose your autobiographical memories, arguably you lose yourself,” Shaw said, “because we define ourselves based on the things we have done in the past, which influences what we think we are capable of in the future.”

The Past Was Not Preserved, It Was Reconstructed

“Every time you recall a memory, you change its shape in a way you may not be aware of,” she said. “You are not accessing your original experience; you are accessing your last memory.”
That distinction matters. Each act of recall, she explained, made the memory unstable again. Some details were strengthened, others faded, and still others were inserted. Forgetting and falsification emerged from the same process. The brain did not store life as a video recorder might. It stored fragments across sensory and emotional systems, then rebuilt them on demand.
“Memory is an infinitely complex network that is constantly in motion,” Shaw said. “Every time you reactivate a memory, it becomes malleable. You reinforce some parts, you lose some parts, and you can even add false pieces to the network.”
In other words, certainty was no guarantee of truth.
We Were All, In Some Sense, Memory Thieves

“Be cautious of where your memories are from, be curious about the memories of others, and be kind,” she said. “Just because someone says something that isn't true doesn't mean they are lying; they might just be misremembering.”
It was a plea for scepticism without cruelty, and for a more mature understanding of disagreement. Conflicting accounts were not always evidence of dishonesty. Sometimes they were evidence of biology.
False Memories Could Feel Indistinguishable From Real Ones
If memory’s flexibility sounded merely inconvenient, Shaw’s research showed how quickly it could become dangerous. In her work, she had convinced people they had committed crimes that never happened. The process required no science fiction machinery. It depended on suggestion, trust and repeated imagination.
The result was startling. High stakes false memories, including imagined acts of theft or assault, could be implanted in a substantial number of participants. And once formed, those memories did not feel counterfeit. They felt real.
Research in neuroimaging, she noted, had confirmed the disturbing symmetry. The brain’s response to a false autobiographical memory could look much like its response to a genuine one. Imagination and memory shared the same broad neural machinery. The line between what had happened and what had been vividly pictured was far thinner than most people liked to believe.
That was why Shaw’s work mattered beyond the lecture hall. She had used these findings in training with police and military professionals, where the stakes included false confessions and wrongful convictions. In those settings, the myth of perfect recall could become an instrument of injustice.
The Most Dangerous Confidence Was The Confidence We Had In Ourselves
Shaw was especially sharp on one form of everyday self-deception: the belief that important details would simply stay with us. This was as true of future intentions as it was of past events.
Humans, she argued, were chronically overconfident in prospective memory, the belief that we would remember to do something later. Cancel the subscription. Send the message. Bring the document. Make the call. The confidence felt rational, right up until the task was forgotten.
The practical remedy was almost embarrassingly simple. Do not trust memory where a record will do.
Writing things down, keeping external documentation and resisting the temptation to embellish stories were not admissions of weakness. They were defences against a system that was, by design, unstable.
Sleep, Sensory Richness And The Discipline Of Accuracy
For all the existential tremors in Shaw’s talk, her advice was grounded and usable. If memory changed when revisited, then it could also be strengthened more carefully.
Sleep, she stressed, remained the biological foundation. It was during sleep that the brain consolidated information, helping experience stick. Neglecting sleep while chasing sharper cognition was, in this light, self-defeating.
She also recommended building multi-sensory memory traces. The more ways an event or intention was encoded, through sight, sound, feeling, language or context, the more routes the brain had back to it. And if accuracy mattered, people should become less theatrical in retelling. Every embellishment might be enjoyable in the moment, but it risked rewriting the memory itself.
These were not glamorous interventions. They were disciplined ones.
Trauma Could Not Always Be Erased, But It Could Be Reframed
Shaw also addressed the seductive fantasy of deletion. Painful memories, she suggested, were unlikely to be cleanly removed wholesale. The architecture of memory was too distributed for that simple kind of erasure.
But all was not fixed. One of the most promising areas of research involved separating factual content from emotional charge. In trauma, the goal was often not to obliterate what happened, but to reduce the intensity with which it was relived.
Prioritising sleep, revisiting experiences in less emotionally loaded ways and consciously restructuring interpretation could all support that process. In this sense, memory hacking was not about becoming a machine. It was about becoming less captive to the worst versions of one’s own story.
A Radical Proposal: Choose The Person You Want To Become
The most provocative part of Shaw’s talk came when she turned from warning to possibility. If memory and imagination were deeply entwined, then the same flexibility that made people vulnerable could also make them adaptable.
“You can use the science of memory hacking to essentially become whatever you want to be and decide your own past,” she said. “Pick an identity and decide who you want to be by playing with the flexibility of the brain.”
It was a line that might have sounded like self-help if it had not emerged from a lecture so rigorous in its pessimism. Shaw did not mean that facts ceased to matter, or that fantasy should replace reality. She meant that identity was less fixed than we assumed. Repeated mental rehearsal, deliberate reframing and careful attention to what stories we told about ourselves all helped shape the networks from which the self was built.
That was the promise inside the warning. The mind was porous. The self was revisable.
The Ethical Imperative Was Humility
By the end of the session, Shaw had given the audience something rarer than a biohacking trick. She had given them a reason to doubt their own inner authority.
Not because memory was useless, but because it was human. It drifted. It borrowed. It beautified. It protected. It accused. It consoled. It lied without meaning to.

She offered a harder and more humane discipline: question your memories, document what matters, sleep enough to consolidate what you can, and treat other people’s conflicting recollections with compassion.
