At Biohacker Summit 2016 Helsinki, held in Helsinki, Finland, on 17 and 18 November 2016, Sarah Turner offered a provocation that cut against the grain of conventional nutrition science. In her talk, *How To Get Supercharged: Powering Your Body With Physics & Structured Water*, Turner asked the audience to reconsider one of the most basic assumptions about human energy: that the body runs chiefly on calories and chemistry.
Instead, Turner, founder of SuperCharged Performance and director and co-producer of the film *SuperCharged*, made the case that the human body should be understood as a biological battery. Life, in this framing, was less a matter of fuel burned than of electrons transferred, charge separated and energy stored through the body’s relationship with its environment.
It was an expansive thesis, part physiology, part biophysics, part biohacking manifesto. Food still mattered, she said, but so did barefoot contact with the earth, exposure to sunlight, heat, cold and movement itself.
A Challenge To The Biochemical Orthodoxy
Turner began by opposing what she described as the standard schoolbook story of energy. Plants captured sunlight, humans consumed plants or animals, and metabolism transformed this intake into usable power. Useful as that model was, she argued, it did not go deep enough.

This phase, which she described as H3O2, was said to create charge separation, producing a negatively charged zone adjacent to a more positive region. As in a battery, the separation of charge mattered because it created potential energy. In a body composed overwhelmingly of water molecules, Turner argued, that mechanism was not peripheral. It was foundational.
She placed this theory within a wider lineage, mentioning researchers such as Gilbert Ling and Mae-Wan Ho, who each in different ways challenged mainstream assumptions about cellular energetics. But Pollack’s work, she suggested, gave the concept its most accessible architecture: water as the medium through which the body stored and organised energy.
From there, the practical question followed naturally. If water was the battery, how might it be charged?
Grounding, Light And Cold As Environmental Fuel
Turner’s answer was resolutely environmental. The body, she said, could be “supercharged” by inputs other than food, beginning with grounding.
Standing barefoot on the earth, she argued, enabled direct electron transfer from the ground into the body. Drawing on work associated with Stephen Sinatra, she cited claims that even ten minutes of grounding could reduce inflammation and improve blood viscosity. Damp ground, sand and grass were presented as especially effective surfaces.
Yet Turner also introduced a note of caution often absent from wellness evangelism. Grounding, she said, should be understood in context. In polluted areas or near what she called “dirty electricity”, increased bodily conductivity might bring unwanted exposures as well as benefits.
Light and heat formed the next piece of the puzzle. Turner described sunlight as a kind of charging mechanism, capable of expanding the body’s zone of structured water. Heat, too, she said, promoted the separation of charge. The skin, in this account, functioned less like a passive covering than like a solar panel.
She then turned to cold thermogenesis, invoking the influence of Wim Hof and the growing fascination with deliberate cold exposure. Cold, she argued, increased redox potential and electron flow while also improving the body’s capacity to hold charge. Cold showers, face dunking and more extreme methods such as ice baths were all offered as routes toward greater energetic resilience.

Turner did not stop at water alone. She widened the frame to include what she called the “Living Matrix”, a collagen-rich network running through the body. She was not only asking the audience to revise how they thought about hydration or sunlight, but to imagine physiology as fundamentally electro-mechanical, informational and responsive to subtle environmental forces.
The Everyday Biohacks Of A Larger Philosophy
What made the presentation land with the Biohacker Summit audience was its insistence that these ideas, however radical they sounded, translated into simple habits.
Turner recommended ten minutes of daily earthing, preferably on damp natural ground. She urged “light hygiene”, including morning daylight exposure and the reduction of blue light at night through orange-tinted glasses or screen filters. She advocated gradual cold adaptation through short bursts of cold water. She encouraged high-quality hydration, favouring spring water and water exposed to more natural conditions.
These suggestions were delivered not as isolated lifestyle tweaks but as parts of a coherent philosophy. Health, in Turner’s account, depended on restoring an older conversation between body and environment, one disrupted by sealed shoes, artificial light, indoor living and technological excess.
The Seductive Promise Of Re-Enchantment
There was, in Sarah Turner’s presentation at Biohacker Summit 2016 Helsinki, something more than a technical lecture. It was also a story about modern estrangement. Her argument implied that human beings had not merely miscounted nutrients or misunderstood exercise. They had forgotten the physics of being alive.
That was the appeal of her message. It took familiar experiences, sunlight on skin, cold air, bare feet on wet ground, and recast them as acts of energetic restoration. It offered not just optimisation, but re-enchantment.
Whether every scientific claim she cited would withstand the hardest scrutiny was, perhaps, a separate question. But the force of the talk lay in how confidently it stitched together redox biology, water science, circadian thinking and ancestral practice into a single vision of vitality.
By the end, Turner had given the Helsinki audience a striking proposition: that the path to more energy might begin not with eating more, but with learning once again how to connect, conduct and charge.
