At Biohacker Summit 2016 Helsinki, Ben Greenfield Asked A Provocative Question
On Thursday, 17 November 2016, at Biohacker Summit 2016 Helsinki in Finland, Ben Greenfield strode onto the stage with a challenge that cut against the grain of the very culture gathered before him. In a room built for optimization, measurement and technological enhancement, the American performance coach and bestselling author argued for something both older and more radical: that the human body, left in closer contact with nature, already contained many of the capacities modern biohacking was trying to buy, implant or engineer.
Greenfield, known through BenGreenfieldFitness.com and long celebrated in health and fitness circles as an endurance athlete, coach and author, did not come to dismiss biohacking outright. His talk, titled *Ancestral Living Vs. Biohacking 2.0: Tapping Into Innate Human Biology & Nature*, aimed instead to redraw the boundary between useful innovation and needless intervention. His case was simple, even if its implications were not. Before surrendering to expensive gadgets, synthetic shortcuts and invasive upgrades, he said, people should ask whether their own biology had already provided the answer.
A Morning Wake-Up Call, Barefoot And Breathing
Greenfield opened not with data, but with theatre of the body.
He invited the audience to remove their shoes, stand, squat, lunge and, in effect, remember they had limbs. He spoke of grounding and earthing, of reconnecting physically with the Earth rather than beginning the day sealed off from it. Then came an appeal to oxytocin, the so-called trust hormone, as attendees were urged to greet one another with a handshake or a hug.
The room, by turns amused and compliant, was then led through a burst of rapid belly breathing. Greenfield framed the exercise as a low-tech nervous system stimulant, a reminder that breath could jolt wakefulness as effectively as any stimulant or wearable.
The symbolism was unmistakable. Before the slides of implants, chips and devices appeared, Greenfield had already staged his thesis: that simple bodily practices, nearly free and entirely ancient, still retained a power the marketplace often ignored.
The Case Against The Cult Of Constant Upgrades
Modern biohacking, Greenfield suggested, had drifted toward a seductive but uneasy frontier. Gene editing, brain chip implants, synthetic blood, transcranial stimulation and magnetic implants all promised heightened performance, richer sensation or extended life. But they also invited a deeper question. At what point did enhancement become estrangement from the body itself?
He used the strange story of Thomas Thwaites, the British artist who famously devised prosthetic limbs to live among goats, as an absurd but telling example of technological overreach. What looked at first like comic spectacle became, in Greenfield’s framing, a warning about how easily the pursuit of altered experience could untether itself from biological wisdom.
This was not a sermon against curiosity. It was a plea for proportion.
“Step back and ask yourself if you have the ability to accomplish your goals on your own before you start forking over the cash for all these spendy tools, techniques, and expensive biohacking equipment,” Greenfield told the audience.
That line hung over the presentation like a refrain. Much of what followed was an effort to prove it.
The Forgotten Powers Of Human Biology
One of Greenfield’s most arresting claims was that humans already possessed latent capacities often treated as futuristic novelties. He pointed to natural echolocation, electromagnetic sensitivity and subtle forms of interpersonal sensing as examples of innate abilities that did not necessarily require hardware.
He referenced Daniel Kish, the blind American known for using clicks and sound reflection to navigate the world with extraordinary skill, even riding a bicycle through urban streets. For Greenfield, Kish represented more than human resilience. He represented a rebuke to the assumption that technology must always precede capacity.
Similarly, Greenfield argued that people might cultivate greater sensitivity to environmental and interpersonal signals through attention, emotional regulation and contact with nature, rather than through implanted magnets or electronic augmentations. He spoke of the heart and brain as generators of electromagnetic fields, and of the possibility that practices such as breathing, grounding and nervous system awareness might sharpen sensitivities modern life had dulled.
There was, in this, both science and mysticism, a blend characteristic of many wellness stages in the 2010s. Yet the emotional force of his argument did not rely entirely on whether every claim could withstand laboratory scrutiny. It drew strength from a broader cultural fatigue, the creeping suspicion that innovation had begun solving problems created by distance from ordinary life.
Strength As Longevity, Not Vanity
If one section of the talk landed with particular force, it was Greenfield’s defence of strain.
At a time when anti-ageing culture increasingly marketed itself through clinics, compounds and expensive protocols, he made a nearly austere case for lifting heavy objects. Strength training, he argued, was one of the most powerful and accessible tools available for longevity and resilience.
“One of the most potent things you can do for longevity is to subject your body to straining, pushing, lifting, or pulling against something that is really hard,” he said. “You can increase your health by simply lifting heavy things.”
The beauty of the claim was its bluntness. Not a chamber, not an infusion, not a members-only intervention. A weight. A kettlebell. A deadlift bar. Failing that, a body challenged by gravity through slow push-ups, squats or isometric holds.
Greenfield linked these efforts to telomere protection, muscular health and biological robustness. Whether framed in the language of cellular ageing or common sense, his message cut through the polished sheen of the conference economy. Longevity, he implied, had become overcomplicated. The body still understood effort.
Food Before Formulas
Nowhere was Greenfield’s scepticism toward commercial biohacking clearer than in his treatment of food.
Rather than embrace the fantasy that meal replacements, nootropics and synthetic stacks represented nutritional progress, he argued for nutrient-dense whole foods as both safer and often equally effective. Eggs, leafy greens, capers, herbal teas and other dense ancestral staples were presented not as rustic compromise but as biological intelligence.
In discussing night vision and cognition, he pointed to compounds such as lutein, zeaxanthin and beta-carotene, available through whole foods rather than experimental injections or enhancement products. He urged the audience to examine labels, question complexity for its own sake, and remember that health had long been built from ordinary ingredients.
The critique was subtle but pointed. Biohacking, in its most consumerist form, risked turning nourishment into a subscription service. Greenfield’s answer was to pull it back to the kitchen, the field and the market stall.
Cold Showers, Sunlight And The Discipline Of Simplicity
Again and again, Greenfield returned to the same idea: many sought-after effects could be reached by simpler means.
Why chase premium cryotherapy, he asked, if cold showers already delivered a natural stress response? Why outsource circadian health to costly devices if morning sunlight remained freely available? Why depend on meditation headbands when sitting quietly in nature could still recalibrate a frayed mind?
“Go outside, find a quiet spot, and sit. Sit and look at nature for ten minutes. It is harder than you think, but it actually works, and there is no expensive app or fancy electronic headband required,” he said.
That small prescription, what he described as a “sit spot,” may have been the most radical suggestion of the day. It offered no metrics, no graph, no performance dashboard. Its reward was harder to quantify: attention, calm, sensory recovery, the slow return of perception.
He coupled such practices with movement snacks, grounding, deep squats and isometric holds, urging attendees to treat health not as a series of elite interventions but as a relationship with the body renewed throughout the day.
A Warning About Invisible Burdens
Greenfield also reserved suspicion for the devices meant to monitor health continuously. Wearables, Bluetooth accessories and Wi-Fi enabled trackers, he warned, might impose their own physiological cost. He spoke of reducing exposure to constant electronic signals and suggested a more ancestral alternative: checking one’s pulse manually, tracking effort through awareness rather than relentless digital feedback.
This was not merely technophobia. It was a critique of over-quantification, of the idea that every meaningful bodily signal needed a sensor to become real. In Greenfield’s view, the danger was not only electromagnetic exposure, though he raised that concern, but the outsourcing of instinct itself.
To know your body, he implied, was a skill. Modernity had made many people forget it.
Returning To The Body Without Rejecting The Future
What made Greenfield’s talk compelling was that it did not argue for retreat from modern life so much as discernment within it. He was speaking, after all, at Biohacker Summit 2016 Helsinki, not from a forest hermitage. He knew the appeal of self-experimentation and high-performance tools because he had built a career inside that world.
But his presentation insisted that progress should not be confused with novelty, nor enhancement with wisdom.
“We can return to our ancestral roots and learn how to interact with food and nature to develop our own abilities,” he said. “We can communicate and thrive without needing electronic telepathy or expensive chips implanted in our bodies.”
And later, in a line that distilled the ethos of the entire session, he added: “Get some sunshine, go barefoot every once in a while, do some deep squats, and keep your body healthy. Ask yourself if you are doing the simple things before you go out and try every fancy new device out there.”
The Quiet Radicalism Of Doing The Obvious
In a conference devoted to the next frontier, Ben Greenfield’s message may have been powerful precisely because it sounded so old. Lift something heavy. Breathe deeply. Eat real food. Seek sunlight. Sit in nature. Use the body before modifying it.
Such advice could be mistaken for banality. In Helsinki that day, it felt closer to dissent.
For beneath the performance tricks and futuristic promise, Greenfield exposed a more profound tension in the biohacking movement: whether the future of human flourishing lay in ever more intricate interventions, or in relearning the ordinary rituals that industrial life had persuaded people to abandon.
His answer was unmistakable. The body, he argued, was not a broken machine awaiting upgrade. It was an inheritance, ancient and underused, still waiting to be trusted.
