Motivation, Max Gotzler told the audience at Biohacker Summit 2018 Stockholm, was not a mystical force reserved for the gifted, the disciplined or the unusually lucky. It was biochemical, deeply human, and surprisingly fragile. Yet it could also be shaped.
In his presentation, *Hacking Motivation: The Force That Drives You Forward*, Gotzler, the biohacker, author and founder of Flowgrade, set out to explain why people so often surged toward a new goal with enthusiasm, only to drift back into old habits once the first spark faded. His answer lay in dopamine, anticipation and, above all, in the question that modern self-optimisation culture too often skipped: why?
Motivation Was A Feeling Before It Became A Strategy
Gotzler opened not with data but with introspection, asking the audience to reflect on how motivation felt in the body. He invited them to compare the emotion of buying a ticket to the summit with the feeling of arriving at the venue. The distinction mattered. The act of choosing, anticipating and pursuing often felt more energising than the event itself.
That, he suggested, was the first clue.
“The idea of a reward often feels much greater than the reward itself,” he said. “The anticipation of a goal is what truly drives our behavior.”
In a culture saturated with instant stimulation, from social media feeds to streaming platforms, this observation landed with unusual force. Human beings were not merely reward-seeking, Gotzler argued. They were anticipation-seeking.
A Childhood Dream Became A Case Study In Purpose
To illustrate the point, Gotzler turned to his own life. As a boy, he had become obsessed with basketball. The dream of reaching the NBA shaped not only his training but his entire identity. It got him out of bed early, kept him away from destructive habits and gave form to decisions that, on the surface, looked unrelated to sport: eating well, sleeping properly, choosing friends carefully, pursuing education.
The dream eventually ended, as many do, when talent met reality. But what stayed with him was not just disappointment. It was the terrifying emptiness that followed the loss of a defining goal.
After he stopped playing, he said, the energy remained but the direction vanished.
“Frustration is a great energy if you have a goal,” Gotzler said, “but it is a terrible and destructive energy if you have no goal.”
It was one of the talk’s most piercing insights. In his telling, motivation was not simply about generating energy. It was about harnessing it.
Dopamine Powered The Loop, But It Did Not Provide Meaning
Gotzler described motivation as a feedback loop rooted in the brain’s reward circuitry, especially the ventral tegmental area, the nucleus accumbens and the prefrontal cortex. Dopamine, the neurotransmitter most closely associated with reward and pursuit, played the starring role.
A rewarding experience produced pleasure. That pleasure created a positive emotional tag. The next time, even the context surrounding the experience could trigger anticipation. From there came pursuit: the willingness to act, repeat, strive and endure discomfort in service of a future payoff.
This, in essence, was motivation.
But Gotzler was careful not to reduce human drive to chemistry alone. Dopamine could explain why a behaviour felt compelling. It could not explain why a life felt meaningful.
The Brain Adapted Quickly To Rewards And Clung To Uncertainty
One of the talk’s most striking themes was habituation. The brain, Gotzler said, adapted rapidly to repeated rewards. What thrilled at first soon became normal. This was true of alcohol, caffeine, digital stimulation and countless everyday pleasures.
Yet unpredictability changed the equation. When the reward was uncertain, dopamine often surged more intensely than when the reward was guaranteed. That, he argued, explained the grip of gambling and the compulsive pull of smartphones, social feeds and algorithmic entertainment. A person kept returning not because each interaction was satisfying, but because the next one might be.
This was the machinery of modern distraction.
In that sense, motivation could be hijacked. Technology had become a marketplace of artificial anticipation, training people to chase small rewards while neglecting larger purposes.
Biology Could Influence Drive, But It Could Not Replace Direction
Gotzler also touched on genetics, including the controversial MAO-A variant often dubbed the “warrior gene”. He described it as a factor linked to greater impulsivity and aggression, suggesting that biology could shape how motivation was expressed. Some people, he said, carried more raw energy, but not necessarily more focused ambition.
The distinction mattered. Energy without direction was not motivation in any meaningful sense. It was volatility.
Stress, pain and illness could also suppress dopamine sensitivity, he noted, contributing to anhedonia, the inability to feel pleasure, which is often associated with depression. The implication was clear: motivation was not a moral virtue that some possessed and others lacked. It was influenced by physiology, environment and context.
Still, none of those factors absolved a person from the central task. One had to decide where to aim.
The Happiness Of Pursuit Mattered More Than The Reward
What emerged most powerfully from Gotzler’s talk was a rejection of the fantasy that fulfillment arrived at the finish line. He spoke of writing a book and discovering that publication itself was less satisfying than the long process of creating it. This, he said, was the deeper truth.
It was not the pursuit of happiness that sustained people, but the happiness of pursuit.
That idea gave his talk emotional reach beyond neuroscience. The most rewarding lives, he suggested, were not those with the biggest trophies, but those organised around meaningful striving. To work toward something worthwhile, especially something that could outlast one’s own lifetime, was one of the great privileges of being human.
“We are the only species that can have goals that extend beyond our own lifetime,” he said, “and that is what makes the pursuit so rewarding.”
Start With Why, Even If The Why Is Small
For all its scientific framing, the talk ended on a simple prescription. Start with why.
Gotzler borrowed the phrase from Simon Sinek, but he made it practical rather than grandiose. The why did not need to be world-saving or historic. It could be modest, personal, identity-based. A person might go to the gym because they saw themselves as healthy. They might save money because they wanted to build security for children not yet grown. Daily habits, in this framing, were not isolated acts of willpower. They were symptoms of a larger dream.
“Start with why,” he said. “The why doesn’t have to be a major thing; it can be a small reason that explains the behavior you actually want.”
He pushed the audience to think on longer timelines, ten, twenty, even a hundred years ahead. If motivation was to endure, it had to be anchored in a future large enough to organise the present.
“All your little goals, like staying fit or eating healthy, should be symptoms of a much bigger dream that shapes your life.”
A Biohacking Culture Received A Moral Warning
There was a subtle warning embedded in the talk, especially for an audience drawn to optimisation. Supplements, smart drugs and performance tools might amplify focus or energy, but they could not determine what deserved that focus. Gotzler recounted the story of a friend who took Modafinil to study for an exam and ended up obsessively researching oil ship coordinates instead. The drug had boosted drive, but not wisdom.
In other words, biology could intensify motivation, but only purpose could civilise it.
That may have been the most valuable lesson of the session at Biohacker Summit 2018 Stockholm. In a world eager for hacks, stacks and shortcuts, Gotzler offered something more difficult and more durable: a demand for alignment between chemistry and meaning.
Motivation, he argued, was not merely about feeling charged. It was about knowing what, in the end, was worth moving toward.
