At Biohacker Summit 2018 Stockholm, Teemu Arina And Hannes Sjoblad Framed The Body As A System To Be Measured, Understood And, Ultimately, Upgraded
On 18 May 2018, at Biohacker Summit 2018 Stockholm in Sweden, Teemu Arina opened the day with a provocation that was equal parts manifesto, invitation and warning. Standing before a crowd drawn from 32 countries, Arina did not speak about wellness in the soft, marketable language that often surrounds the subject. He spoke instead about systems, code, data, aging, recovery and the possibility that the human body, long treated as fate, might become a site of conscious design.
Alongside Hannes Sjoblad, whose work on emerging technologies and the body had already earned international attention, Arina placed biohacking in a far larger frame than diets, sleep gadgets or productivity rituals. This was not presented as self-help. It was offered as a new philosophy of human maintenance and human ambition.
A Manifesto Against Biological Limits
Arina began with a reading from philosopher Max Moore’s “Letter to Mother Nature”, a text that served as both theatrical opening and ideological anchor. Its complaint was simple and audacious: nature had done remarkable work in producing intelligent, feeling, civilization-building beings, but it had also left humanity painfully unfinished.
Disease, aging, sensory limitation, poor memory, fragile impulse control and the absence of any “operating manual” for the self were presented not as immutable truths, but as design flaws. From there came a set of “amendments” to the human constitution, including one line that captured the room’s transhumanist voltage: “We will no longer tolerate the tyranny of aging and death; we will endow ourselves with enduring vitality and remove our expiration dates.”
It was the kind of statement that can sound grandiose in print and electrifying in a hall. Yet in the logic of the summit, it was not rhetoric for its own sake. It was a declaration of intent.
From Sick Care To Preventive Intelligence
For Arina, biohacking was “the art and science of optimizing your performance, health and well being”. The phrase could have remained comfortably vague, but he quickly gave it harder edges. The body, he argued, had too long been approached through reductionism, broken into parts, symptoms and specialties. What was needed now was a holistic model powered by data, bioinformatics and artificial intelligence.
That argument carried an implicit rebuke of modern medicine as it is often experienced: reactive, fragmented and focused on illness after the fact. “The current health care system is a sick care system,” Arina said. True healthcare, in his account, would be preventive, continuous and deeply personalized.
“Bioinformatics will be for health what the microscope was for biology,” he argued, suggesting a future in which daily streams of biological data would replace isolated snapshots from occasional appointments or laboratory tests. The promise was not merely more information, but a different kind of relationship to the self, one in which individuals could become, as he put it, “experts of our own health”.
The Quantified Body And The New Intimacy With Data
If this future had an everyday face, it was wearable technology. Arina described the metrics he tracked nightly and over time: REM sleep, deep sleep, resting heart rate, body temperature, activity, heart rate variability and biomarkers linked to long-term disease risk. Devices such as the Oura ring were not presented as lifestyle accessories, but as instruments in a growing practice of self-surveillance with a preventive aim.
The language was technical but intimate. Deep sleep mattered, he said, because it allowed the glymphatic system to clear metabolic byproducts from the brain, including amyloid beta, which is linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Recovery mattered because modern life had become a physiological assault of travel, deadlines, messages and constant stimulation. In that world, sleep duration alone was an incomplete story. The more revealing question was whether the nervous system had truly been allowed to recover.
“In a modern world where you are bombarded by information, you must take your own life and signal load into your own hands to truly thrive,” Arina said.
That phrase, “signal load”, lingered as one of the summit’s most recognisable insights. It captured something broader than stress. It named the condition of contemporary life as a state of unmanaged inputs, where the nervous system is asked to absorb more than it can meaningfully process.
Genes Are Not Destiny, But They Are Instructions
Arina’s case for biohacking rested not on generic prescriptions but on individual variation. Genetics, he said, offered a powerful starting point for understanding why one person thrived on a given intervention while another did not. He spoke of his own predisposition for celiac disease and the way dietary choices could suppress or provoke its manifestation. He described needing significantly more vitamin D supplementation than others because of genetic factors. He also referenced the APOE4 gene, associated with higher risks of Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease, while noting its suggested link to intelligence.
The point was not determinism, but complexity. Genes mattered, yet epigenetics and environment might matter even more. Biological fate, in this telling, was negotiable.
“We no longer accept to be the slaves of our genes; we will take charge over our genetic programming and achieve mastery of our biological and neurological processes,” Arina declared.
In less careful hands, such language might have drifted into fantasy. Here, it was tethered to a practical ethic of measurement, experimentation and pattern recognition. What works for one person, he argued, may fail another. Biohacking, then, was not a universal doctrine. It was individualized investigation.
Recovery As A Discipline, Not A Luxury
The summit’s title placed recovery before peak performance, and that ordering mattered. Arina’s account of optimization was not one of relentless output, but of strategic restoration. Meditation, breathing exercises, saunas, forest walks and swimming were described not as indulgences but as necessary interventions to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and support high-quality sleep.
Without those restorative phases, he suggested, stress compounds silently. Metrics may reveal the damage before symptoms do. The body, in this framework, becomes legible through trends rather than crises.
Arina offered his own long-term biomarker tracking as evidence of what sustained intervention could achieve. He described improvements in cardiac risk markers, kidney function, blood sugar regulation and testosterone levels, framing them as measurable proof that targeted lifestyle changes could reverse trajectories that once seemed fixed. Whether one shared the summit’s larger ideology or not, the appeal was clear: numbers offered not just feedback, but hope.
A Community Built On Experimentation

Whether one saw that as liberation, overreach or some unstable combination of both, the force of the event was undeniable.
