Productivity has long been sold as a matter of grit, intensity, and will. Work harder. Wake earlier. Drink more coffee. Push until the fog lifts. But at Biohacker Summit 2018 Stockholm, held in Stockholm, Sweden on 18 May 2018, the Swedish biohacker and science author Martina Johansson offered a colder, sharper diagnosis. The real enemy, she suggested, was not laziness or even distraction. It was disorder.

“A lot of people feel that they can’t get anything done unless they are super stressed, and that’s a trap,” she said. “You can be more creative, more productive, and yet more relaxed.”
It was a pointed rejection of panic as a productivity tool. For Johansson, stress can mimic urgency while quietly degrading output. It creates motion without necessarily producing meaning. It offers the sensation of effort, but not always the substance of progress.

Johansson spoke approvingly of timed work intervals, not as a gimmick but as a means of imposing limits, cadence, and accountability on a day that might otherwise sprawl. High Output Requires Prioritization, Not Just Energy
Johansson was especially clear on one point: productivity is not the same as activity. In fact, busyness can be one of its most seductive counterfeits.
“Even if we succeed in creating an artificial state of flow, there is no guarantee we will create anything of value,” she said. “Without structure and prioritization, we just do stupid things faster with more energy.”
That line landed because it named a distinctly modern problem. Many workers know how to answer messages, clear minor tasks, tweak systems, tidy lists, and feel, for a brief moment, accomplished. But Johansson argued that such actions often serve the brain’s reward system more than they serve long-term goals.
Her solution was the Eisenhower matrix, a blunt instrument against self-deception. Focus on what is urgent and important, she advised, and resist the dopamine-rich pull of low-stakes tasks masquerading as progress. Tick-box satisfaction may feel good, but it can become another form of avoidance.
Dopamine, Distraction, And The Cost Of A Modern Morning
If the first half of Johansson’s talk was about architecture, the second was about chemistry.
Focus, she argued, is often misunderstood as a simple shortage of willpower. In reality, it is deeply entangled with dopamine, reward-seeking, and overstimulation. Social media, inbox checking, and constant novelty train the brain toward shallow gratification. They erode the very motivational system people later try to revive with caffeine and brute force.
Her warning about morning habits was particularly sharp. Start the day with coffee and email, she said, and what follows may not be a productive lift but a stress response. Norepinephrine, adrenaline, and cortisol can flood the system, pushing the body into alertness while pulling the mind away from meaningful work.
The result is grimly familiar: a person technically active, mentally agitated, and increasingly remote from the task that matters most.
Johansson’s recommendation was almost austere. Delay rewards. Work first. Let the morning remain a protected zone before opening the gates to messages, meetings, and stimulants.
“Keep your mornings as your productive and creative stress-free zone to really be able to work towards real goals that make a difference,” she said. “Suspend your rewards and focus on high-impact tasks first.”
Designing A Day That Defends Creativity
There was something bracing in Johansson’s refusal to mystify productivity. She described it not as talent, not as temperament, and certainly not as hustle culture’s endless theater of overextension, but as a learnable system.
Track time. Audit output. Use a timer. Build a routine around the work that matters. Preserve executive function. Guard dopamine. Delay caffeine. Postpone email. Replace sugar-hit rewards with work-related milestones. The principles were concrete, almost plain. Yet together they amounted to a quiet rebellion against a world engineered to fracture attention.
Johansson’s larger message at Biohacker Summit 2018 Stockholm was that human beings do not possess infinite cognitive fuel. The brain can be squandered. Motivation can be chemically undermined. And productivity, stripped of myth, is less about forcing more from ourselves than about wasting less.
By the end of the presentation, her argument had gathered unusual moral force. To protect one’s attention was not merely to get more done. It was to create the conditions under which meaningful work could exist at all.
