At Biohacker Summit 2018 Stockholm, held on 18 May 2018 in Stockholm, Sweden, Dr Olli Sovijärvi took a subject that often dissolves into vague wellness language and gave it shape, chemistry and consequence. His presentation, *Nutrients for Stress Management*, argued that stress was not a moral failing or a motivational shortfall, but a biological process that could be influenced with precision.
Sovijärvi, a licensed general practitioner, co-author of the *Biohacker’s Handbook* and one of Finland’s best-known voices in holistic medicine, framed the problem in terms of two core systems: the sympathoadrenal system, which governs the immediate fight-or-flight response, and the HPA axis, which regulates longer-term stress and cortisol output. If those systems were being pushed too hard, he suggested, then nutrients, amino acids and adaptogenic herbs might help restore balance.
This was not a sermon on miracle cures. It was a brisk and densely packed map of compounds that, in his view, could lower cortisol, steady neurotransmitters, protect the brain and improve resilience under strain.
Stress, In Sovijärvi’s Telling, Was Both Immediate And Slow-Burning
One of the more useful distinctions in the talk was the separation between acute and chronic stress. The body’s short-term emergency response, powered by the sympathoadrenal system, was one thing. The slow grind of prolonged cortisol exposure, receptor resistance and nervous system dysregulation was another.
That distinction mattered because the interventions differed. Some compounds were aimed at dampening overstimulation. Others were intended to sharpen cognition under fatigue, improve recovery after exertion or soften the emotional volatility that often arrives when stress becomes a way of life.
The Adaptogens Took Centre Stage
Sovijärvi’s strongest emphasis fell on four adaptogenic herbs: *Rhodiola rosea*, Ashwagandha, Reishi and Schisandra. Used well, he suggested, these were not merely supplements but tools for teaching the body to respond more intelligently to pressure.
Rhodiola Rosea For Fatigue, Focus And Emotional Control
The first of his headline herbs was *Rhodiola rosea*, the Arctic root long associated with endurance and stress resilience. Sovijärvi described it as especially useful for lowering cortisol and influencing a broad set of neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine, serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline.
Its appeal lay partly in that breadth. In his account, Rhodiola did not just lift energy. It also touched the limbic system, the emotional circuitry of the brain, helping the user manage fear responses and emotional overload. For those dragging through stress with sluggishness and mental fog, this was presented as a botanical nudge toward clarity and drive.
Ashwagandha For High-Energy Stress
If Rhodiola was for depleted stress, Ashwagandha was pitched as the answer to a more wired state. Sovijärvi portrayed it as a herb for those who felt overstimulated, overextended and unable to downshift.
He pointed to its ability to lower cortisol, support testosterone and modulate several key neurotransmitter pathways. GABA, the calming neurotransmitter, moved upward. Glutamate, the excitatory counterpart, moved downward. It also affected acetylcholine and the serotonergic system, making it, in his view, useful not only for stress but for emotional balance more broadly.
Ashwagandha was one of his clear favourites for periods when life felt too loud.
Reishi As A “Shen Tonic”
Then came Reishi, discussed with unusual warmth even in a supplement-heavy talk. Sovijärvi called it a “Shen tonic,” using language that reached beyond clinical framing and into older traditions of herbal medicine. “Reishi is a Shen tonic that opens up your heart, induces relaxation, and reduces fatigue and anxiety,” he said.
That line captured the dual identity of the mushroom in his presentation. On one level, Reishi was described through its triterpenoids and polysaccharides, compounds associated with neuroprotection, relaxation and reduced fatigue. On another, it was presented as something gentler and less easily measured, a substance that seemed to promote emotional openness and calm.
In a lecture saturated with mechanisms, Reishi was the closest thing to poetry.
Schisandra For Heat, Recovery And Recall
Schisandra, by contrast, arrived as the athlete’s adaptogen. Sovijärvi highlighted its role in reducing cortisol after exercise, improving post-exertion recovery, sharpening focus and increasing heat tolerance.
He also noted its effect on acetylcholine and memory consolidation, making it relevant not only to physical resilience but to mental performance. Schisandra was, in his telling, a compound for those operating in demanding environments, whether under literal heat, training stress or cognitive load.
The Case For Targeted Supplements
If the herbs formed the emotional and regulatory backbone of the talk, the supplements supplied the tactical edge. Here Sovijärvi turned to phosphatidylserine, L-theanine, L-tyrosine and taurine, each chosen for a specific stress-related function.
Phosphatidylserine For Cortisol Control After Exercise
Phosphatidylserine was presented as a standout for people whose stress was tied to training load or recovery strain. “Phosphatidylserine is perfect for lowering cortisol after exercise while improving your memory, mood, and overall cognition,” Sovijärvi said.
That combination mattered. The supplement was not framed simply as a cortisol-lowering agent, but as a cognitive support, one that could help protect mood and memory at moments when the body had been pushed hard. Sovijärvi also suggested that pairing it with DHA could strengthen its benefits for neural protection and recall.
L-Theanine For A Calm, Alert Mind
If one supplement emerged as the cleanest expression of modern stress management, it was L-theanine. Best known as the calming amino acid found in tea, it was described by Sovijärvi as a reliable way to achieve relaxation without sedation.
“L-theanine helps you achieve a relaxed, calm state and even a meditative state by increasing alpha brain waves,” he said.
That phrase, “alpha brain waves,” has become familiar in wellness marketing, but in this context it was used to explain why theanine occupies such a distinct niche. It does not simply make the user sleepy. It can, he argued, create a focused calm, useful on its own and particularly effective when paired with caffeine to smooth its rougher edges.
L-Tyrosine For Sleep Deprivation And Cognitive Survival
L-tyrosine was described less as a relaxation aid than as a rescue compound. As a precursor to dopamine, and from there noradrenaline and adrenaline, it was positioned as especially useful in conditions of sleep deprivation, shift work and acute mental fatigue.
The message was straightforward: when the brain is exhausted but performance is still required, tyrosine may help preserve cognition, working memory and psychological steadiness. It was, Sovijärvi suggested, a practical tool for people operating at the edge of depletion.
Taurine As A Quiet Powerhouse
Taurine received some of the strongest praise of the afternoon. Sovijärvi described it as a favourite for regular use, citing its influence on GABA, glycine, BDNF, mitochondrial protection and neural growth.
“Taurine is incredibly potent for neuroprotection and the growth of new brain cells, and it protects your mitochondria from oxidative stress,” he said.
That is a large claim, but it spoke to the central logic of the talk: stress is not only a feeling. It is a wear-and-tear event, one that taxes mitochondria, inflames the nervous system and erodes cognitive resilience. Taurine, in his view, helped protect against that erosion.
The Unspectacular Essentials Still Mattered Most
For all the fascination of the exotic compounds, Sovijärvi ended on a more sober note. The foundations of stress management, he said, often remained the least glamorous: magnesium, vitamin C and B vitamins, especially B6 and B12.
“If I were to take just one mineral supplement for stress management, I would use magnesium because it is hugely important for hundreds of enzymes in the body,” he said.
It was the kind of reminder that punctures the consumer fantasy of one perfect capsule. Chronic stress depletes basics first. Before chasing rare extracts and advanced stacks, the body may simply need to have its nutritional deficits corrected.
He also noted that in more severe adrenal exhaustion, where cortisol levels may already be abnormally low, the strategy changes. The task is no longer merely to suppress stress hormones, but to support recovery, including with higher-dose vitamin C, salt and licorice.
A Philosophy Of Personalisation, Not Universal Prescription
One of the talk’s most sensible themes was that effective stress support had to be personalised. Rhodiola, he implied, was not the same as Ashwagandha. Reishi was not Schisandra. The tired, flat and unmotivated person required a different intervention from the tense, overstimulated and anxious one.
That emphasis on fit, not fashion, gave the presentation more credibility than many supplement lectures manage. Sovijärvi did not suggest that all compounds were for all people. Instead, he offered a framework: choose according to physiology, symptoms and context.
The Broader Message Was That Stress Could Be Trained, Not Just Endured

And if there was a quiet urgency to Sovijärvi’s talk, it came from that fact. Stress management was not presented as luxury self-care. It was presented as maintenance of the machinery that makes thought, feeling and recovery possible at all.
