Siim Land’s Case for Escaping the Fragility of Modern Metabolism
At Biohacker Summit 2018 Stockholm, held on 18 May 2018 in Stockholm, Sweden, Siim Land stepped onto the stage with a diagnosis that was as sweeping as it was familiar. Modern people, he argued, were living inside bodies primed for abundance but trapped in patterns of depletion. Chronic fatigue, obesity, diabetes and neurodegenerative decline were not inevitable features of human life, he said, but signs of a metabolism made fragile by environment, habit and diet.

A Metabolism Built to Access Fuel, Not Merely Store It
Land’s central claim was deceptively simple. The crisis, he said, was not that the body lacked energy. It was that most people had lost the ability to access it.
“The problem isn't that there is a lack of energy; the problem is that we are not able to access it,” he said. “Our body fat stores almost unlimited energy, but our modern diet inhibits our ability to tap into that fuel.”
He contrasted two metabolic states. In the first, the body runs primarily on glucose, sourced from carbohydrates and sugars. In the second, it relies on fatty acids and ketone bodies, metabolic compounds generated when fat is broken down. Glucose, Land noted, is stored in relatively limited quantities. Fat, by contrast, represents a vast reserve. Yet a diet dominated by frequent eating and high carbohydrate intake can keep that reserve largely locked away.
This was where ketosis entered his argument. In nutritional ketosis, the body begins producing and using ketones as an alternative fuel, especially when glucose availability falls. Land described ketones as a kind of “fourth macronutrient”, distinct in their effects and long used in clinical settings, particularly in epilepsy treatment dating back to the 1920s.
The promise of keto, in his telling, was not simply fat loss. It was a more stable and expansive energy system, one less prone to crashes, cravings and cognitive fog.
From Ketosis to Keto Adaptation
Land took care to distinguish between being in ketosis and becoming keto-adapted. The former, he said, could be measured through blood ketone levels above 0.5 mmol/L. The latter was a deeper physiological shift, in which the body learned to use fat and ketones efficiently as a primary fuel source.
That transition, he acknowledged, was not always smooth. The so-called keto flu, often marked by fatigue and malaise, reflected a body caught between fuel systems. But once adaptation took hold, Land argued, the benefits extended beyond appetite control or body composition.
He pointed to improved mitochondrial efficiency and biogenesis, describing these cellular powerhouses as central to the prevention of chronic disease and fatigue. A keto-adapted metabolism, he suggested, could sustain effort more efficiently and even broaden the intensity range at which fat could be used for fuel.
Drawing on research by Stephen Phinney and Jeff Volek, Land cited evidence that endurance athletes who had spent months in keto adaptation burned more fatty acids during prolonged exercise. The implication was that adaptation did not simply alter what the body burned at rest. It changed the body’s whole energy economy.
Why Strict Keto Was Not the Final Goal
Yet Land’s most interesting point was also his most paradoxical. Strict ketosis, he argued, was not the endpoint.
“The purpose isn't to maintain strict ketosis or to eat a strict ketogenic diet,” he said. “The purpose is to achieve metabolic flexibility and reach antifragility where you can utilize carbohydrates without losing your ability to burn fat.”
In this formulation, a rigid ketogenic diet could itself become another form of fragility. If a person became so dependent on dietary control that any deviation triggered energy instability, then the system had not become resilient, much less antifragile.
What mattered instead was flexibility: the ability to move between fuel sources without suffering metabolic collapse. Land outlined several strategies, including the standard ketogenic diet, targeted carbohydrate intake around training, and cyclical periods of carbohydrate refeeding. Used carefully, he suggested, these approaches could preserve fat-burning capacity while allowing the body to process carbohydrates strategically and effectively.
He presented this as a three-stage progression. First came strict keto, then keto adaptation reinforced through both aerobic and anaerobic exercise, and finally metabolic flexibility, where carbohydrates could be reintegrated with precision rather than fear.
The Use of Stress as a Tool
If Land’s framework had a moral centre, it lay in his embrace of stress, at least in measured doses. Antifragility, he said, required hormesis: the process by which small, manageable stressors trigger beneficial adaptation.
“Hormesis is a biological phenomenon where a sweet spot of a toxin actually makes you better and stronger,” he said. “You need some oxidative stress from heat saunas and cold thermogenesis to teach your body to adapt and resist stress.”
Fasting, carbohydrate restriction, exercise, sauna use and cold exposure all featured in this blueprint. So did certain plant compounds and foods, from green tea and dark berries to sulforaphane-rich vegetables, turmeric, ginger, medicinal mushrooms and dark chocolate. These were presented not merely as nutritious ingredients but as signals, mild challenges that prompted the body to strengthen its internal defences.
At the same time, Land warned against overusing antioxidant supplements, arguing that too much protection could blunt the body’s own adaptive responses. Some stress, in his view, was not the enemy of health but one of its preconditions.
The Argument Against Over-Restriction
One of the more provocative sections of Land’s talk extended the logic of antifragility beyond macronutrients. He suggested that excessive dietary restriction, whether in the name of paleo purity, vegan discipline or allergen avoidance, could render the body overly sensitive.
Invoking the legend of Mithridates VI, the ancient king said to have developed poison resistance through gradual exposure, Land argued for limited, strategic contact with foods often cast as enemies. Gluten, legumes and nightshades, he suggested, should not necessarily become permanent exiles from the plate if the goal was long-term robustness.
The point was not indiscriminate eating. It was the avoidance of a brittle system in which a single departure from dietary orthodoxy triggered outsized consequences. His language was unapologetically blunt: a body that cannot tolerate the ordinary frictions of modern life, including occasional exposure to common foods, has not become strong.
Gut Health, Longevity and The Microbiome
Land also tied antifragility to the gut, placing particular emphasis on microbiome diversity. Fermented foods, butyric acid and short-chain fatty acids were presented as essential to healing the gut lining and supporting cognitive function and longevity. Butter, sauerkraut and other fermented staples entered his framework as more than lifestyle flourishes. They were metabolic supports for a resilient inner ecosystem.
This concern for the microbiome sat comfortably within his broader thesis. Health, in Land’s account, was not built through comfort, abundance and biochemical insulation. It was cultivated through adaptation, diversity and the right kind of challenge.
A Rebellion Against The Sugar-Burning Default
Running through the entire presentation was a critique of the modern “sugar-burning mode”, not simply as a dietary pattern but as a way of living. A body that depends constantly on glucose, Land implied, is a body forever nearing an energy cliff, forever reaching for the next meal, the next stimulant, the next rescue.
“The foundation to antifragility is the ketogenic state because you can always level up,” he said. “If you are keto adapted and consume some sugars, you gain a benefit, but you cannot level up from a sugar-burning mode by fasting or eating fat.”
That was the architecture of his argument: first establish access to fat and ketones, then build the capacity to move fluidly across fuel sources, then expose the body to carefully dosed challenges so that it does not merely survive stress but grows from it.
More Than A Diet
By the end of his talk at Biohacker Summit 2018 Stockholm, Siim Land had offered something larger than a nutritional protocol. He had sketched a philosophy of metabolism, one in which human health depended on restoring capacities that modern life had dulled: the ability to fast without panic, to exercise without collapse, to tolerate variation without falling apart, and to draw energy from the abundance already stored within.
“Chronic diseases are not supposed to be a part of our human nature or human biology,” he said. “They are deviant in nature, caused by simple mismatches in our environment and the food that we eat.”
In Land’s telling, the ketogenic diet mattered not because it promised purity, but because it offered a route out of dependence. Not a permanent retreat from carbohydrates, but a way to transcend the limitations of being ruled by them. Not resilience alone, but the harder and more demanding ambition of antifragility.
