Reishi, the lacquered red fungus often called the mushroom of immortality, was presented as a grounding tonic, a support for anxiety, shallow breathing and overstimulation. In Willard’s language, it protected “the academic from their own mind,” a vivid phrase for a culture saturated in nervous thought.
Chaga, the blackened conk that grows on birch, was cast as a powerhouse of antioxidant activity, gentle enough for daily tea and broad enough in use to support blood sugar balance, cholesterol and organ protection. Its reputation, in his account, extended from Siberia to Finland, where it had long been used as a tonic.
Lion’s Mane drew attention for its effects on cognition and nerve growth factor, a mushroom increasingly discussed in wellness and nootropic circles for memory, neurogenesis and brain health.
Cordyceps, perhaps the strangest of the lot, was praised for enhancing oxygen flow and supporting stamina. Willard described its use by athletes seeking better respiratory capacity and reduced lactic acid buildup, while also pointing to its place in traditional medicine as an adrenal and libido tonic.
Turkey Tail, meanwhile, carried some of the boldest claims. Willard pointed to its use in Japan and China, where extracts containing PSK had been integrated into cancer care, particularly alongside chemotherapy. He described it as one of the most heavily studied medicinal mushrooms in the world.
Fungi As The Planet’s Cleanup Crew
If fungi offered personal medicine, Willard argued, they also offered planetary medicine. He described mycelial networks as master bioremediators, organisms capable of breaking down toxins, digesting oil and helping contaminated ecosystems recover. Even in places marked by catastrophe, he said, fungi persisted as agents of repair.
This was one of the talk’s most powerful themes: that mushrooms do not merely survive collapse, they work upon it. They metabolise damage. They turn waste into possibility.

Willard’s philosophy of food was less doctrinaire than many wellness frameworks, and therefore more memorable. He called his approach “flexitarian,” built around an 80/20 principle: most of the time, eat as well as possible; some of the time, leave room for pleasure and imperfection. “Zero guilt,” he said, mattered too.
But his more unusual idea was “levity.” He urged the audience to seek foods with upward moving energy, the vitality of wildness, the freshness and force he believed industrial food strips away.
“Find the levity,” he said. “Look to where a plant holds its energy and that is where you find true nutrition. The spirit found in wild foods is high in qi and levity, an upward moving energy that defies the gravity of this world.”
For Willard, wild mushrooms were not only nutrient dense. They were carriers of relationship, of place, of a less deadened way of eating.
What The Fungi Knew
