Titled *Encounters Of The Divine In The Machine*, Barnett’s address moved through forests, fungi, autoimmune illness, generative software and the oldest human question of all: where, precisely, does the sacred reside when technology begins to dream in our visual language?
Barnett, a British artist based in Cape Town, has long built his practice from the textures of the natural world, from the floral kingdoms of the Cape to kelp forests and mountain stone. At the summit, he proposed that this attention to nature was not merely aesthetic. It was physiological. It was, he argued, a form of biohacking.
Nature As Nervous System Technology
Barnett traced his relationship with the summit back to earlier editions, where his imagery had already helped shape the event’s visual atmosphere. He recalled first encountering the term biohacking with some uncertainty, before arriving at a definition that would become central to his work.
“By going out into nature and looking at the textures you find, you are modulating your nervous system in a way that is hacking and that is a form of biohacking,” Barnett said.

And yet Barnett’s talk was notable for refusing both naïve enthusiasm and reactionary panic. Instead, he searched for examples of artists who had found in AI not replacement but extension.
One such example was Marcus K, a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores molecular biology and particle physics through generative forms. Barnett explained that discovering Marcus K’s practice changed his thinking. The work’s depth and resolution revealed to him a potential in generative art that he had not fully grasped.
Vulnerability As A Creative Threshold
The emotional centre of the presentation arrived when Barnett spoke about illness. Marcus K, he said, lives with ME/CFS and is largely housebound and bedbound, continuing to make immersive art despite severe physical limitation. Barnett connected this to his own experience with Crohn’s disease, reflecting on the uncanny proximity between bodily fragility and creative intensity.
“There is a kind of divine connection when you are in your most vulnerable position,” Barnett said. “Some of the work with the most impact is produced when the artist is at their weakest.”
It was a line that reoriented the room. In an event devoted to optimisation, enhancement and performance, Barnett introduced another truth: that creativity may emerge not only from mastery, but from fracture. Not despite weakness, but through it. The divine, in this account, was not triumphal. It appeared in exposure, in surrender, in the moments when control loosened and something deeper entered.
Art, Ethics And The Commons Of Human Culture
Barnett also addressed the ethical turbulence surrounding AI art. “This immersion of nature and technology is something that we as powerful human beings are able to guide, allowing us to imagine technology as sacred,” Barnett said.
In that sentence lay the thesis of the entire talk. Technology, in Barnett’s vision, was not fated to remain extractive, cold or spiritually vacant. It could be tutored by human reverence. It could be oriented toward wonder.
Lichen, Deep Time And The Coalition To Come
One of the most memorable passages in the presentation came when Barnett turned to lichen, that ancient alliance of fungi and algae whose evolutionary history reaches back roughly a billion years. For him, lichen was more than a subject. It was a model. A lesson in coalition.
The natural world, he suggested, had always advanced through improbable partnerships, through forms of coexistence that eventually made new life possible. Fungi and algae joined, and the world changed. Why should the relationship between humans and machines be imagined only as conquest or collapse?
“We have the potential to create a coalition by working with technology and training it into the awe and wonder we have for the natural world,” Barnett said.
In Amsterdam, at a summit often defined by the future of the body, Barnett offered a deeper timescale and a humbler one. He asked the audience to see AI not only as disruption, but as a partnership whose moral and aesthetic character remained open to human intention.
Finding The Divine In The Algorithm

His claim was subtler and, in some ways, more challenging.
