In an age intoxicated by optimisation, Jan Rein offered a quieter, sterner message. Speaking at Biohacker Summit 2023 Amsterdam on 14 October 2023, the nutrition scientist and AG1’s Director of Nutrition, Content and Compliance EU urged his audience to resist the fantasy that better health could be purchased in capsules alone.

Instead, it sought to restore order to a marketplace of promises by placing supplements where Rein believed they belonged: not at the centre of health, but above its foundations.

A Personal Story Sat Beneath The Science
Rein’s argument was not delivered as abstract theory. It was anchored in biography, and in family pain. He told the audience that his father’s stroke during a family holiday in Brazil, and the long years of illness that followed, changed the course of his life. Watching a parent suffer through the cumulative effects of poor habits left a mark deeper than any textbook could.
That experience pushed him towards nutrition science. Later, his own diagnosis with IBS forced the matter inward. He studied, wrote, and eventually built a career around helping people make more intelligent decisions about health. By the time he took the stage in Amsterdam, Rein was speaking not only as a scientist but as someone who had made health an act of personal reckoning.
That history gave the talk its urgency. Rein was not merely discussing supplement protocols. He was arguing for ownership.
“I believe in choices on health that are backed by science but are also individual,” he said.

Above those daily behaviours, Rein placed what he called foundational nutrition supplements. These were described as a kind of universal nutritional baseline, intended to replenish key nutrients shared across populations before moving on to more personalised interventions.
He likened them, with some self-aware humour, to insurance. Not every policy is necessary, he suggested, but some forms of protection are sensible because they cover common risks. In the same way, a foundational supplement could function as a broad nutritional safeguard, particularly in modern diets where consistency is often more aspirational than real.
Rein described these formulas as a “micro-stack” in one product, combining vitamins, minerals, beneficial bacteria and whole-food-derived ingredients such as ashwagandha and mushrooms. The point, in his framing, was not maximalism but practicality: a baseline before complexity.
The Real Question Was Not What You Take, But What You Absorb
The most substantive scientific thread of the talk concerned bioavailability, a term often used loosely in wellness marketing but given sharper definition by Rein. The issue, he said, was not simply what appeared on a supplement label. It was what the body could absorb, convert and deliver to cells.
“Bioavailability is not just about what is on the label; it is really about what your body absorbs and makes available to your cells,” he said.
To illustrate the point, Rein contrasted synthetic cyanocobalamin with methylated forms of vitamin B12, arguing that the latter more closely matched what the body could use. He also cited the evolution of protein science, where nutritional thinking had moved beyond sheer quantity to questions of digestibility and amino acid completeness, measured through standards such as PDCAAS.
The implication was clear. Consumers who focus only on dosage may be buying an illusion of adequacy.
Synergy Could Multiply Benefits, Or Cancel Them Out
If bioavailability explained how nutrients entered the system, synergy explained how they behaved once there. Rein’s description was elegant in its simplicity.
“With nutrients, one plus one is not always two, but sometimes three. Synergy enhances the effects of a single nutrient by combining it with others that work better together,” he said.
Vitamin D and vitamin K served as his most straightforward example, a pairing often discussed in nutrition circles because of their complementary roles. But Rein was equally interested in negative interactions. Nutrients could also inhibit one another, and a poorly timed habit could sabotage a carefully planned regimen.
Coffee, he noted, can impair iron absorption. In practice, that meant a person taking iron while drinking their morning coffee might be undermining the very intervention they believed was helping them.
It was a small example, but an effective one. Rein’s wider point was that supplement stacking without understanding interaction was less optimisation than guesswork.
Personalisation Was The Peak, Not The Starting Point
At the top of the pyramid sat specialty needs. This was the realm of customisation: omega-3s for someone who did not eat much fish, vitamin D in darker northern months, performance enhancers for training, nootropics for focus, and in some cases pharmaceuticals.
Rein stressed that this layer should be individual, shaped by genetics, environment, diet and goals. He offered himself as an example, noting that he was not especially efficient at converting plant-based precursors into DHA and EPA, making direct omega-3 supplementation more relevant for him than for someone whose diet regularly included fish.
That emphasis on individuality was one of the talk’s more careful notes. Rein was not presenting a universal shopping list. He was arguing for sequence: foundation first, customisation second.
Why Cycling Matters In A Culture Of Constant Use
Rein also addressed a familiar tendency in biohacking culture: the temptation to take stimulating or performance-oriented compounds continuously. Here, he warned against what he described as negative feedback, where repeated use blunts the body’s response over time.
Cycling certain supplements, especially stimulants and other high-impact compounds, was presented as a way to preserve sensitivity and reduce adaptation. The message applied not only to pre-workout products but to the wider logic of enhancement. More, taken constantly, was not necessarily better. In some cases, it was simply less effective.
That idea cut against the industry’s commercial incentives, which often favour perpetual use. Rein’s formulation was more restrained, and therefore more credible.
A Holistic Argument In A Fragmented Market
What made the presentation resonate was not novelty but coherence. Rein gathered familiar ideas, sleep matters, nutrient form matters, interactions matter, individuality matters, and arranged them into a hierarchy that made sense of the cluttered supplement economy.
“I believe in choices on health that are backed by science but are also individual,” he reminded the audience.
And by the close, he returned to the broader ethic that had opened the talk: health not as a series of hacks, but as a discipline of stewardship.
“Health is our most valuable asset. Let us show that simple, effective habits have a great impact and are the start of taking ownership of your health,” Rein said.
In Amsterdam, before an audience eager for the next frontier of optimisation, Jan Rein made a persuasive case that the frontier was not always farther ahead. Sometimes, it was lower down the pyramid, waiting in the ordinary disciplines people were most tempted to skip.
