Speaking at the VERGE conference in Helsinki on Monday, the principal AI advisor at SAS Institute emphasized that while change is inevitable, humans must retain oversight of increasingly powerful AI systems.
"Predicting the future of work regarding AI is extremely difficult. In some sense, we are really just stumbling forward blindfolded, hoping that the future will be bright," Heino told attendees at the AI Frontier event, where industry leaders gathered to discuss emerging challenges in creativity, security and collaboration.
The challenge of predicting AI's impact
Drawing on his experience advising major enterprises across the Nordics and UK, Heino identified a significant cognitive bias affecting our ability to forecast AI's true impact: "We tend to overestimate the amount of change in the short term but underestimate it in the long term."
This paradox has already played out in unexpected ways. Just a few years ago, experts confidently predicted creative professions would be among the last disrupted by AI. Yet today, actors seek protection for their likeness while writers and artists battle for copyright protection against AI-generated content.
The pace of change faces real-world constraints that Heino terms "inertia" – from the limited number of graduates in specialized fields to political factors, funding limitations, and even the rate of mineral extraction for computing hardware.
Three levels of AI integration in the workplace
Rather than predicting which jobs might disappear, Heino outlined three increasingly sophisticated ways AI will integrate into work processes:
The first level involves AI assistants augmenting human workers – already commonplace through chatbots and copilots, but becoming more specialized. In law enforcement, for example, AI assistants help officers identify missing information in case documents, enhancing productivity without replacing human judgment.
The second tier – AI agents – goes further by taking actions on behalf of humans in virtual environments. "They multiply what one person can do by providing virtual colleagues," Heino explained, though he cautioned they remain error-prone and should be deployed selectively.
The most advanced level involves fully automated decision-making systems, which Heino suggests should be limited to areas where errors have minimal consequences. "Most automation benefits are achieved with deterministic approaches," he noted, emphasizing that safety-critical applications demand human oversight.
The essential human element
Despite his optimism about AI's transformative potential, Heino repeatedly stressed the necessity of human control.
"To build, I think a career for the future means that we learn to collaborate with AI, and we also learn our new AI assistants or colleagues' strengths and weaknesses," he told the audience.
This collaboration extends to education, where AI tutors could revolutionize learning by personalizing content to individual students' needs and pace. Organizations like Khan Academy are already exploring this potential, though Heino acknowledged the challenge of continuous adaptation: "As the pace of change keeps accelerating, we have to constantly learn these new things. But sometimes it's just bloody exhausting, isn't it, to constantly keep up the learning."
Finding the right balance
The stakes for organizations are high. As AI capabilities advance, companies must carefully navigate how to enhance human capabilities without eroding expertise or ceding critical decisions to algorithms.
"The companies that get this balance right won't just survive the AI revolution, they will lead it," Heino concluded.
His message resonated in a conference hall filled with technology leaders wrestling with similar questions: how to harness AI's undeniable potential while ensuring human intelligence and judgment remain central to their organizations' futures.
For individuals planning their careers amid this uncertainty, Heino offered one prediction with confidence: "One of the most important skills in the future will be the ability to tell computers exactly what you want, so it can do it for you."
