On Friday, 16 October 2020, at **Biohacker Summit 2020 Helsinki**, breathwork expert **Kasper van der Meulen** delivered a presentation that felt at once intimate and urgent. Speaking remotely to an audience scattered between the hall in Helsinki, Finland, and screens across the world, he opened not with data, but with affection, sending what he called a “big fat shout out” to his “biohacker family” and lamenting the hugs the pandemic had made impossible.
Then he moved to his central claim: resilience was not a vague personality trait bestowed on the lucky few. It was a trainable skill. And the most immediate tool for training it, he argued, was the breath.
The Breath As The First Responder
Van der Meulen’s talk, titled **“Hacking the Breathspan for an Optimal Life”**, hinged on a deceptively simple observation. Breathing is automatic, yet accessible. It belongs to the body’s autonomic machinery, but unlike heart rate or blood pressure, it can also be consciously directed.
“**Breathing is an autonomic function that we can gain conscious control over, allowing us to align our heart rate, brain waves, and heart rate variability into a state of coherence,**” he said.
That idea formed the backbone of the session. If each mental and physical state comes with its own breathing pattern, then altering the breath can become a way of influencing the nervous system itself. In van der Meulen’s framing, the breath was not merely a mirror of stress. It was a lever.
“**Every state of mind and body is paired with a state of breath, which means your breath is the first responder of your nervous system,**” he told the audience.
A Digital Room Breathing Together
One of the talk’s more striking moments came when van der Meulen invited participants into a short live exercise. Whether in the summit venue or joining from home, listeners were asked to breathe in and out for four counts, preferably through the nose, with slow diaphragmatic control and equal rhythm.
The aim was what he called coherence: a physiological alignment between breathing, heart rate variability and brainwave activity. He suggested that wearable devices such as the OURA ring could capture the shift in real time, turning a subjective feeling of calm into a measurable event.
The exercise was simple, almost spare. Inhale for four. Exhale for four. Let the exhale soften. Use the diaphragm, not the shoulders. Breathe as if the body were settling into safety.
What made the moment resonate was van der Meulen’s insistence that even a dispersed crowd could enter a kind of shared physiological rhythm. In a year defined by separation, he offered a brief image of synchrony.
Sympathetic Speed, Parasympathetic Repair
The science of the talk was presented in broad but practical strokes. Van der Meulen described the nervous system through its two familiar poles: the sympathetic state, often reduced to fight or flight, and the parasympathetic state, commonly called rest and digest. He preferred a gentler phrase for the latter: “stay and play.”
The distinction mattered because, in his account, different breathing styles belonged to different biological functions. Fast, shallow, chest-led mouth breathing was associated with heightened sympathetic activation, useful for action, urgency and performance. Slow, nasal, diaphragmatic breathing, especially with emphasis on a long exhale, signalled parasympathetic activity, the territory of digestion, immune regulation, recovery and social connection.
“**Proper, well-balanced immune function is dependent on the extent to which you can modulate yourself between a state of stress and a state of recovery,**” he said.
This was a crucial nuance. Stress itself was not the enemy. Productivity, alertness and focus all depend on sympathetic mobilisation. The danger lay in getting stranded there, in living so continuously in stimulation that the body lost fluency in returning to calm.
What The Body Practises, The Body Becomes
Van der Meulen returned repeatedly to adaptation. The body, he argued, becomes what it repeatedly does. Nervous system states are no exception.
“**In biology, form adapts to function. Whatever you do often is what you get better at, and your body will adapt to the functions that you require of it repeatedly,**” he said.
It was a line that neatly captured the ethos of the biohacking world while also issuing a warning to it. The relentless pursuit of performance, aided by caffeine, nootropics and constant stimulation, might sharpen output in the short term. But over time it could erode flexibility, making rest feel inaccessible and calm feel foreign.
For van der Meulen, that loss of flexibility was the real collapse of resilience. Resilience was not about being permanently switched on. It was about being able to move deliberately between activation and recovery, to meet the demands of a moment without being trapped by them.
Hormesis, CO2, And The Edge Of Control
From there, the talk turned toward training. Van der Meulen suggested that resilience could be built by maintaining calm breathing patterns during controlled stressors such as heat, cold, exercise or other discomforts. This was his practical application of hormesis: exposing the body to challenge in ways that strengthened rather than overwhelmed it.
“**Hormesis is the ability to overcome an obstacle and be stronger for it, and breathing is the fastest modality we have to regulate the nervous system through intensity,**” he said.
His explanation drew on carbon dioxide tolerance. As metabolism rises under effort or stress, CO2 levels increase, blood chemistry shifts, and the body feels the urge to switch into a more stressed breathing pattern. The training, then, is to notice that threshold and resist collapsing into panic breathing. Keep the breath nasal. Keep it diaphragmatic. Slow the exhale. Stay composed under load.
He offered practical examples: running with the mouth closed, doing push-ups while preserving slow nasal breathing, using heat or cold exposure while consciously regulating the breath. The point was not to avoid intensity, but to meet it without surrendering respiratory control.
In that sense, resilience became measurable as a threshold: how much stress could a person absorb before their breathing lost its calm architecture?
A Philosophy Of Recovery For An Anxious Time
Although the session was rooted in physiology, it also carried the emotional logic of the pandemic year in which it was delivered. Van der Meulen acknowledged the ambient anxiety produced by news cycles, uncertainty and isolation. In such conditions, he suggested, many people lived in a low-grade sympathetic state for so long that it began to feel normal.
What they needed most, he argued, was not simply more output, but a renewed capacity for recovery, connection and safety. The breath offered a way back.
His message was not mystical, though it brushed against the language of transformation. Nor was it narrowly clinical. It occupied the increasingly crowded space where neuroscience, performance culture and self-experimentation meet. Yet what gave the talk force was its insistence on something elemental: that between the body and the world, there remained one system most people could still reach directly.
