Meditation has long been sold as the cleanest of modern biohacks: cheap, ancient, scientifically endorsed, spiritually flattering. Breathe, sit, observe, and the nervous system would follow. Yet in Helsinki, at Biohacker Summit 2020, Stefan Chmelik stood before an audience steeped in self-optimization and offered a more unsettling truth. For many people, he said, meditation did not fail because they lacked discipline. It failed because their biology would not let them relax.
In his presentation, *Meditation: The Ultimate Biohack – So Why Can’t Most People Do It?*, Chmelik, founder of BioSelf Technology and inventor of Sensate, described a world in which stress had become not merely common but structural. “We are more attention divided than we've ever been before,” he said. “It is very difficult to have a still mind or a still body in the world we live in, and the impact is felt on our breathing.”
That opening insight carried the force of diagnosis. The problem, in Chmelik’s telling, was not simply that life had become busy. It was that modern existence had entrained the body into a chronic survival response, one that made the very act of becoming still feel unsafe.
The Disease Beneath The Diseases
Chmelik spoke as both clinician and entrepreneur, drawing on years of work with patients at London’s Harley Street, where he founded the New Medicine Group. There, he said, a central question emerged: why did some people remain ill while others recovered, sometimes against the odds?

“We have exchanged wolves and bears for AI and smartphones,” Chmelik said, “but our primordial brain still perceives threat from any source that is overwhelming. The human blueprint is essentially one of stress and anxiety.”
It was a sharp reframing of contemporary wellness culture. Stress was not an unfortunate side effect of modernity. It was, increasingly, the climate in which modern bodies lived.
The Vagus Nerve As The Missing Link
If heart rate variability had become the favored metric of the quantified-self era, Chmelik wanted his audience to look deeper. What lay beneath HRV, he argued, was the vagus nerve, the long, wandering regulator of the autonomic nervous system and the most tangible expression of the gut-brain connection.
“The vagus nerve is the physical embodiment of the gut-brain connection,” he said. “It regulates most of the autonomic nervous system functions which are vital for your own personal resilience.”
In Chmelik’s framework, vagal tone was not an abstract technical measure. It was a map of how well a person could self-regulate under pressure. Better tone meant greater flexibility, better recovery, and a stronger capacity to return from stress rather than remain trapped inside it.
He described this in language that fused neuroscience with training logic. “You can tone a nerve in the same way you would tone a muscle,” he said. “Every time you do a practice that has an effect on the nervous system, you're making that neural network more robust until it becomes your default.”
That word, default, mattered. The goal was not a fleeting experience of calm, but a rewiring of what the body reached for automatically: panic or relaxation, vigilance or recovery.
The Dark Side Of Mindfulness
The most striking part of Chmelik’s talk came when he described what he had seen in clinic over the past decade. It was not merely that people struggled to meditate, or found their minds too busy. It was something more severe, and more revealing.
Some patients, he said, felt worse when they tried to relax. Notice the breath, and panic rose. Sit still, and the urge to flee took over. Close the eyes, and the body interpreted inward attention as danger.
This was not laziness, nor spiritual incompetence. It was neurological resistance born of hypervigilance.
For those people, traditional mindfulness could become a cruel instruction. The command to be still forced them into contact with the very tension their bodies had worked so hard to hold at bay. Meditation, instead of soothing the nervous system, exposed how unsafe the nervous system already felt.
Chmelik named this plainly: a substantial group of people were, in effect, neurologically unable to meditate.
That claim punctured one of the gentlest myths in the wellness industry, that calm is available to everyone in the same format. What if the route inward had been blocked by evolution, trauma, overload and chronic stress? What if stillness, for some, was not a refuge but a trigger?
Evolution Never Promised Us Peace
Chmelik’s evolutionary argument was bracing in its simplicity. Human beings, he said, were not descended from the deeply relaxed. They came from the suspicious, the watchful, the slightly anxious, the ones who heard a rustle and assumed danger.
In prehistoric landscapes, that bias preserved life. In technological society, it lingered as a mismatch.
The brain still scanned for threat. The nervous system still mobilised. Only the sources had changed. Notifications replaced predators; ambiguity replaced attack; stimulation replaced scarcity. Yet the body, ancient and unsentimental, responded as if survival itself were in question.
The implication was profound. Anxiety was not a defect layered on top of an otherwise serene design. It was close to the design itself. That did not make chronic stress inevitable, but it did explain why transcendence proved elusive, and why so many techniques that relied on conscious control faltered against more primitive circuitry.
A Case For Felt Sense Over Thought
If fear is embodied, Chmelik argued, then safety must be communicated in the same language. “We feel fear, we don't think fear,” he said. “To communicate to a primordial brain in a state of hypervigilance, you have to use a felt sense. Vibration is hardwired into every cell in our body more than any other sense.”
This was the hinge of his talk. Words, analysis and effortful mindfulness might be too slow, too cognitive, too easy for a vigilant mind to resist. But low-frequency sound and vibration, applied through the thoracic cavity, could bypass conscious friction and speak directly to the body.
Chmelik described the use of infrasound vibration on the chest, synchronized with audio, to stimulate the vagus nerve and induce a relaxation response. In practical terms, he framed this as a technological extension of something humans had been doing for millennia through chanting, humming, omming and mantra, all practices that physically vibrate the chest.
The theory was both futuristic and ancient. The chest became a resonating chamber. The body became hardware. And calm, instead of being summoned by mental effort, was invited through sensation.
Building Adaptogenic Resiliency
The phrase Chmelik returned to was “adaptogenic resiliency.” By this he meant the ability to self-regulate subconsciously, in real time, under changing conditions. Not stoicism, exactly. Not serenity as posture. More the living capacity to absorb shock without being consumed by it.
In his biography, Chmelik’s guiding line is stark: “If the problem is hypervigilance, the solution is adaptogenic resiliency.” In Helsinki, that idea served as the moral centre of the presentation. The modern crisis was not merely one of stress, but of failed adaptation. The body had lost confidence in safety. It needed help finding its way back.
Crucially, he insisted that any serious solution had to meet ordinary human realities. It had to be easy. It had to be enjoyable. And it had to demand little expertise. Otherwise, those who most needed it would be excluded by effort, complexity or despair.
This was the practical edge of his argument. A tool that required discipline in people already overwhelmed would likely fail. A method that bypassed resistance, by contrast, might succeed where good advice had not.
What The Talk Revealed About The Modern Self
There was, beneath the biohacking language and the commercial product, a larger cultural truth in Chmelik’s presentation at Biohacker Summit 2020 Helsinki. It was that many people had not failed at peace. Peace had become inaccessible through the usual channels.
The modern self, flooded with stimulus and trained into vigilance, could no longer be assumed capable of responding to silence with ease. For some, the first task was not enlightenment. It was physiological permission to stand down.
Meditation remained, in Chmelik’s formulation, an extraordinary tool. But it was not universally available in its traditional form. Before stillness could heal, the nervous system might need to be convinced it was safe enough to stop bracing.
That was the challenge he placed before the wellness world in Helsinki on 16 October 2020: not whether meditation worked, but for whom, under what conditions, and at what biological cost.
It was a harder question than the industry often liked to ask. It was also, perhaps, the more honest one.
