In October 2020, as the world stood inside the long shadow of a pandemic and public life had been rearranged by distance, caution and uncertainty, Teemu Arina opened the Biohacker Summit 2020 Helsinki with a message that was both intimate and expansive. His presentation, *Opening Remarks – Becoming a Resilient Being*, did not treat resilience as a slogan or a lifestyle accessory. It cast it instead as a biological, philosophical and moral practice, forged under pressure and refined through attention.
Speaking in Helsinki, Finland, on Friday 16 October 2020, Arina welcomed an audience gathered under unusual conditions, with extra space, heightened safety measures and a palpable awareness that the event itself had become a small act of perseverance. The founder and curator of the Biohacker Summit, a futurist and one of the most recognisable figures in the biohacking movement, used the moment to argue that crisis had always been one of humanity’s harshest but clearest teachers.
“In times of turmoil, resilience becomes a virtue,” Arina said.
A Summit Held In The Atmosphere Of Crisis
The setting mattered. Biohacker Summit 2020 Helsinki took place over 16 and 17 October at a time when large gatherings were under intense scrutiny and much of the conference world had fallen silent. Arina acknowledged the strangeness directly, noting the precautions in place and the fragility of the moment. Yet he also suggested that such disruption had a way of exposing what was essential.
The event, he told attendees, had been designed to be safe, flexible and spacious. But beyond the logistics was a deeper claim. Human beings, he argued, do not become resilient through comfort. They become resilient through challenge, through repeated confrontation with forces that demand adaptation.
His language moved quickly from the immediate reality of the coronavirus era to the scale of species history. Viruses, he noted, had repeatedly shaped human development, with remnants even embedded in our DNA. The point was not fatalism. It was that upheaval, however brutal, often forced a reorganisation of life.
Only by being challenged, he suggested, do we truly grow.
Resilience As An Iterative Practice
Arina’s central argument was that resilience is not something bought, downloaded or completed in a month. It is not a quick transformation program or a superficial self-improvement ritual. It is iterative, layered and cumulative.
He described it as a process that begins “from a cellular level” and extends outward to the organism and then beyond the individual, to what he called the “superorganism”. In this view, a person is not a sealed and sovereign unit but part of a larger living system, intertwined with microbial life, environment and society.
That idea gave his remarks both their scientific flavour and their philosophical depth. Resilience, in Arina’s account, was not merely mental toughness. It was the capacity of the entire human system to adjust, regulate and return to balance under stress.
“Biohacking is about balance, homeostasis, and finding the natural balance in your ecosystem,” he said. “It is systems thinking where you learn and improve through feedback loops.”
The Wounded Healer At The Heart Of Self-Optimization
One of the more arresting strands of the address was Arina’s invocation of the “wounded healer”, a concept drawn from myth and psychology. He referenced Prometheus, the bringer of fire, and Chiron, the healer whose own suffering became inseparable from his wisdom. In doing so, he shifted biohacking away from the sterile language of optimisation and into something older, more human and more painful.
“We are all wounded healers in training,” Arina said. “It is often our own hurt and the personal struggles we go through that give us the power to help others heal.”
The line was not rhetorical flourish. Arina tied it to his own history, recounting his struggle with chronic stress-related illness, including an ulcer, roughly a decade earlier. What followed, he said, was a hard recognition that no institution or expert could substitute for personal responsibility. Doctors and research mattered. Consultation mattered. Science mattered. But ultimately, he had to participate in his own recovery with seriousness and discipline.
That is where his version of biohacking departed from caricature. It was not presented as techno-fetishism or elite self-experimentation for its own sake. It was framed as a response to fragility, a way of learning from damage rather than pretending immunity from it.
Biohacking Beyond Performance Culture
Arina offered a definition of biohacking broad enough to include lifestyle, nutrition, medicine and technology, but careful enough to resist reduction to productivity culture.
“Biohacking is better living through science, technology, and nature,” he said. “You consult the best leading practitioners, but in the end, you have to test things on yourself.”
The phrase captured the dual nature of his worldview. On one hand, it valued evidence, tools and emerging knowledge. On the other, it insisted on lived experimentation and individual variation. What works for one body may not work for another. Data can guide, but embodiment decides.
He drew an explicit contrast between what he characterised as an American model of biohacking, centred on becoming “better, faster, stronger”, and a European sensibility focused on equilibrium. In his telling, the true objective was not endless acceleration but homeostasis. Not domination of the body, but intelligent cooperation with it.
That distinction mattered, because it placed limits on the ideology of optimisation. There was little triumphalism in his formulation. The body was not a machine to be bullied into output. It was a complex ecology to be understood, listened to and nudged back into harmony.
Systems Thinking And The Biological Computer
Much of the intellectual architecture of the talk rested on systems thinking. Arina described the human being as a “biological computer” and a “cybernetic organism”, continuously receiving input, generating output and evolving through feedback.
The metaphor was technological, but his intent was not mechanistic simplification. Rather, he wanted to emphasise complexity. The body, as he presented it, was a web of metabolic pathways, nervous system processes, biochemical signals and environmental interactions. To intervene intelligently, one had to understand patterns, not just parts.
This is where quantified self practices entered the frame. Wearables, metrics and self-tracking were not celebrated merely as gadgets. Arina cast them as tools for accelerating feedback loops, making the invisible visible and allowing individuals to recognise the consequences of behaviour more quickly.
“Quantified self is self-knowledge through numbers,” he said. “It is a modern approach to enlightenment and a mirror through which you can see yourself more clearly.”
It was a striking formulation, half laboratory and half monastery. Measurement, in this account, became a way not only of managing physiology but of observing the self with new precision. Numbers were not the enemy of introspection. They were one of its contemporary forms.
The Microbiome, The Holobiont, And The Return To Nature
If Arina’s speech had a spiritual centre, it was his insistence that human health cannot be understood in isolation from the living world around and within us. He spoke of the person as a holobiont, a host of symbiotic relationships rather than an autonomous singularity. The microbiome was central to this vision.
He reminded the audience that microorganisms in the human body outnumber human cells and that gut bacteria communicate with the brain through biochemical signalling. Diet and lifestyle, therefore, do not merely alter weight or energy levels. They can influence mood, cognition and the texture of consciousness itself.
This argument led him toward a broader critique of modern life. The rise of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other degenerative conditions, he suggested, was inseparable from the ways in which people had drifted from their evolutionary context. Urban life, careerism and disconnection from the natural environment had severed many from their “true nature”.
The pandemic, in his reading, had sharpened that discomfort. It forced many to ask what it meant to live in a city “in a box”, cut off from ecological rhythms and bodily intuition. Whether taken literally or symbolically, his call was clear: resilience required reconnection, not only with data and technology, but with forests, air, light, food systems and microbial life.
Stoicism In An Age Of Uncertainty
Threaded through the speech was another old tradition with renewed relevance: Stoicism. Arina did not use it as a decorative reference but as a practical framework for enduring volatility. In uncertain times, he suggested, the boundary between what can and cannot be controlled becomes painfully obvious.
External events may remain chaotic. Other people may remain irrational. Systems may remain unstable. But a person can still train perception, regulate reaction and cultivate a steadier nervous system.
This, for Arina, was not separate from biology. It was biology. Stress is not only what happens outside us. It is what happens in our interpretation of what happens outside us. The way one reacts can determine whether the body remains trapped in strain or returns toward equilibrium.
In that sense, his model of resilience fused ancient philosophy with contemporary physiology. The disciplined mind and the regulated body were not rivals but partners.
A Philosophy Of Responsibility
There was, beneath all the references to metabolism, microbial ecosystems and self-tracking, a stern ethic of responsibility. Arina’s most forceful point was that healing cannot be fully outsourced. Expertise has its place, but passivity is a dead end.
He spoke as someone shaped by his own period of breakdown, and that lent his claims a certain authority. The audience was not being told simply to consume better products or adopt fashionable routines. They were being urged to become active participants in understanding their own systems.
That is perhaps why the talk resonated beyond the biohacking subculture. At its core was a proposition that feels increasingly urgent in an era of institutional mistrust, chronic disease and technological saturation: that human beings need better tools, yes, but also deeper self-knowledge; more science, but also more humility; more innovation, but also more balance.
The Mirror And The Measure
By the close of his opening remarks at Biohacker Summit 2020 Helsinki, Teemu Arina had sketched a worldview in which resilience was at once cellular and civilisational, personal and ecological, empirical and existential. He offered no fantasy of invulnerability. Instead, he argued for adaptation, reflection and reciprocal relationship with the systems that sustain life.
“We are a way for the universe to see itself,” he said, echoing Carl Sagan, before returning to his own preferred image: biohacking as a mirror.
It was a fitting metaphor for a conference convened in a year of upheaval. Mirrors can flatter, but they can also confront. Arina’s challenge to his audience was not to become superhuman. It was to look more clearly at what they were, what shaped them, and what forms of balance might still be possible in a destabilised world.
In Helsinki that October, resilience was presented not as a mood, but as a method.
