Aging As The Mother Of All Diseases
The central argument of the presentation was stark. Aging, Cordeiro said, was the primary risk factor behind the major diseases that kill most people. To fight cancer, heart disease or neurodegeneration one by one was, in his telling, to fight shadows while ignoring the body that cast them.
“Aging is a flexible process that you can modify,” he said. “Aging can be controlled, aging can be reversed, and aging can be cured.”
It was the sort of claim that, in another era, would have sounded like alchemy. The Gospel Of Longevity Escape Velocity
Few concepts from the longevity movement have the rhetorical force of “longevity escape velocity”, and Cordeiro leaned into it. By 2029, he suggested, humanity could reach the point at which life expectancy increased faster than time passed. Survive one year, gain more than a year in expected lifespan. It was a phrase built to thrill believers and provoke sceptics.
Beyond that lay the more radical horizon: 2045, the year Cordeiro linked to full biological rejuvenation and the broader singularity thesis associated with futurist Ray Kurzweil. The aim was not simply to keep people alive for longer, he argued, but to keep them young.
That distinction mattered to him. No one, he implied, wanted to be “immortally old”. The dream was not endless frailty. It was sustained vitality.
Nature Already Knew How To Cheat Death
One of the more compelling moments in the talk came when Cordeiro pointed out that biological immortality was not entirely hypothetical. Nature, he argued, had already run the experiment.
Cancer cells, for all their horror, can become effectively immortal. Germ cells persist without aging in the same way as somatic cells. Creatures such as hydras seem to evade senescence altogether. If immortality exists in fragmented forms across biology, then the human task is not to invent it from nothing, but to understand and redirect it.
That idea gave the talk a strange power. Death was not presented as sacred, nor even as inevitable, but as an engineering failure waiting to be corrected.
“I want to be immortal because life is beautiful,” Cordeiro said. “I not only want to extend life, but also expand life.”
There was, in that line, something touching beneath the futurist bravado. For all the charts, dates and technologies, the emotional heart of the argument was disarmingly simple: life was worth keeping.
Silicon Valley, Big Science, And The New Gold Rush Against Death
Cordeiro framed anti-aging research as the next great industrial transformation. Tech companies and billionaire-backed ventures, he said, were now investing heavily in longevity science. Google’s Calico, Microsoft’s biomedical ambitions, and the philanthropy orbiting Silicon Valley all appeared in his telling as evidence that the campaign against aging had moved from the fringe to the boardroom.
He described the anti-aging sector as a future giant, perhaps the largest industry on Earth. That prediction may yet prove exaggerated, but it reveals a profound shift in the culture of innovation. Death itself was being approached with the language once reserved for software, logistics or energy. It was a system problem. It required better tools.
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic,” Cordeiro said, invoking Arthur C. Clarke. “We are going to see magic in the next few years because these things are changing exponentially.”
Magic, here, meant sequencing genomes in hours rather than years. It meant reprogramming cells. It meant replacing the old tempo of biological research with the breakneck speed of computational progress.
Mars, Transhumanism, And Life Beyond Old Human Limits
Cordeiro’s vision did not stop at the body. Like many transhumanists, he tied the conquest of aging to the expansion of human civilisation beyond Earth. He spoke of Mars training in northern Spain, of Elon Musk’s ambitions, of caves and lava tubes as rehearsal spaces for another planet.
His argument was that super-longevity made deeper sense in a multiplanetary future. Longer lives would not only reduce suffering. They would widen the arc of human possibility.
“As transhumanists, we believe in three things,” he said. “Super longevity, super intelligence, and super happiness. We should live longer, more intelligent, and happier lives.”
This was a politics of abundance, though not one without its shadows. If death became optional for some before others, what new hierarchies would emerge? If human beings could indefinitely redesign themselves, what would remain of the old democratic idea of a shared fate? These questions hovered at the edge of the presentation, unresolved but impossible to ignore.
Plan B, If The Revolution Comes Too Late
For those who feared dying before rejuvenation arrived, Cordeiro offered a fallback. Cryopreservation, he said, was Plan B. The logic was familiar to the transhumanist world: if present medicine could not save you, future medicine might, provided the body or brain could be preserved.
He referred to cryonics not as science fiction but as a bridge. The same mindset governed his broader framework, borrowed in part from longevity theorists who speak of living long enough to benefit from the next wave of therapies, then the next, and the next again.
The wager was immense. It required faith not only in technology, but in continuity: that scientific civilisation would persist, that institutions would hold, that tomorrow would be able to honour today’s frozen promises.
The Beauty And The Burden Of Living Far Longer
During the discussion, a questioner raised the oldest objection of all: perhaps mortality serves a purpose. Perhaps death is part of adaptation, turnover, evolution itself. A species that never died might also never change fast enough to survive.
Cordeiro did not yield. Life, he replied, was beautiful. He wanted not just more of it, but more within it, more learning, more worlds, more experience.
It was a revealing exchange. Beneath every argument for immortality lies another question, quieter and more difficult. Not can we live longer, but how should we live if we do?
At Biohacker Summit 2020 Helsinki, Dr. Jose Cordeiro offered one answer, bold to the point of provocation. Humanity, he argued, stood near the threshold of its oldest dream. The age of resignation was ending. Biology was becoming editable. Death was losing its monopoly on the future.
